Senta ( Serbian - Cyrillic Сента [ sɛ̌ːnta ], German, Romanian and Hungarian [ zɛntɒ ]: Zenta ) is a city on the river Tisza in the province of Vojvodina in Serbia .

Although the city is geographically located in the Batschka , it is part of the Northern Banat ( Severni Banat ) district. According to the 2011 census, the town has 18,704 inhabitants, while Opština Senta has 23,316 inhabitants; the majority of the urban population (around 77%) consider themselves to be Magyars .

The city is best known for the Battle of Zenta in 1697.

history

The city was first mentioned in 1216 under the name Szintarev . Since 1246 it belonged to Csanád County , part of the Kingdom of Hungary . In 1506 Senta was granted the privilege of a free royal city. Troops of the Ottoman Empire destroyed the place in 1526 and it remained under their rule during the 16th and 17th centuries.
