history
The academy was founded on November 1st, 1886 by a law passed by the parliament, which left King Milan I. Obrenović to choose the founding members. They could then choose the other members. The first 16 members of the academy's four departments were appointed by the king on April 5, 1887.

precursor
The forerunner of the academy was the Society of Serbian Learning (Društvo srpske slovesnosti), founded on May 31, 1842 , which was merged into the Serbian Learning Society (Srpsko učeno društvo) on July 29, 1864 . On May 13, 1886, this society was dissolved to pave the way for the Royal Academy. Due to protests, the learned society was reopened on July 25, 1887.
