Vladimir Stevanović
Vladimir Stevanović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Владимир Стевановић ; born December 4, 1947 in Belgrade ) is a Serbian botanist , biogeographer and plant sociologist whose field of work includes general questions about the flora of the Balkan Peninsula. Since 2012 he has been a permanent member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts .
Scientific career and works
Vladimir Stevanović has been the head of the systematic botanical department at the University of Belgrade for many years . He is head of the Department of Plant Geography and Synocology at the Faculty of Biology. He heads and coordinates the tasks in the committee of the vegetation mapping of the southern republics of the former Yugoslavia (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia) in the 50 km UTM network of the Atlas Flora Europaea, acts as editor of the Red Data Book of Serbia ( Crvena knjiga flore Srbije , German Red List of Species of the Flora of Serbia) and is the chief editor of the new edition of the Flora of Serbia ( Flora Srbije ) published by the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences (SANU ).
Vladimir Stevanović received his doctorate from the University of Belgrade in 1984 with a plant-sociological and floristic thesis on the steppe vegetation of the Fruška Gora ( Ekologija, fitocenologija i florističkastructa stepske vegetacije Fruške Gore ). On November 2, 2006, he became a corresponding member, and on November 1, 2012, he became a permanent member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts for Ecology and Biogeography.
Among the numerous scientific works on taxonomy, ecology and synsociology, the editing of the Biodiversity of Yugoslavia ( Biodiverzitet Jugoslavije ) (1996), as well as the work on mapping the endemic vegetation of the Balkan Peninsula, is particularly worth mentioning. He is a member of OPTIMA and in 2009 chaired the Fifth Botanical Congress on Balkan Flora at the Serbian Academy in Belgrade.
Research priorities
Technically, the research area includes all terrestrial plant communities of the Balkan Peninsula with a special focus on endemic societies, neo- and paleo-endemics and in particular analyzes of the floristic inventory of the Balkan high mountains and the elaboration of hotspots of regional biodiversity. This work on the core areas of the phytodiversity of the Balkan mountains and regions follows on from earlier work by William Bertram Turrill and August von Hayek , in which, while Vladimir Stevanović was in charge of the Department of Phythogeography, the herbarium collections on the Balkan flora at the Biological University of Belgrade were expanded considerably has been. From this collection, for example, together with employees of his department, the evaluation of the Ice Age relic flora of the former Pleistocene glaciated mountains of the Balkan Peninsula, or the regional hotspots of endemic, sub-demic, arctic-alpine and Mediterranean plant groups were evaluated.
