history

In the 3rd century AD there was a Roman settlement in the area of today's Vrmdža , which is also mentioned in writing. The place was in the center of today's Vrmdža and was called Latium Vilaris. In the settlement there was a small Roman fortress that was supposed to protect an imperial road. This led to the east of the Roman Empire . It is believed that defending the road was the main reason for settling the Vrmdža region. In addition, there was also trade in Latium Vilaris. The small fish-rich lake also served the residents as a destination for excursions, something that today's residents like to do. In the 6th century the city was developed into a fortress to defend the Byzantine Empire from the invasion of the Slavs in this region. The Rtanj mountain range was also of strategic importance.

During the Slavic occupation of the Balkans in the 6th and 7th centuries AD, the Byzantine Empire lost the area around Vrmdža. The Slav Bulgarians settled in the area after the conquest. It is not known how long the place was called Vrmdža and how it got its name.

At the end of the 11th and beginning of the 12th century, Serbian kings conquered the area around today's Vrmdža. From that time on there was a fortress on the border to the Bulgarian Empire, later to the Ottoman Empire, which was supposed to secure the border, because the town of Knjaževac , which today belongs to Serbia, was then still called Gurgusovac and belonged to the Bulgarian Empire and later to the Ottoman Empire Rich.

In the 14th century, the place was a fortified manor whose rich landowners did a lot of trade with merchants from Dubrovnik . After the fall of the Serbian despotate against the Ottomans in 1459, the area around Vrmdža also became Ottoman and remained so until 1804 at the time of the First Serbian uprising against the Ottomans. The village was also mentioned in Turkish tax books in the 16th century. The remains of the Roman and later the Serbian fortress around Vrmdža still exist today. The villagers found evidence of the Romans in the 16th century . Among other things, large Roman bricks with Roman numerals , parts of spears and arrows, copper coins , ceramic objects and human bones were found. Today some of the finds are also exhibited in Serbian state museums.

In 1878 Vrmdža became part of the principality of Serbia, which was now completely split off from the Ottoman Empire . From 1918 the village belonged to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia .

In World War II, German and Bulgarian troops occupied the village. In September 1943, 177 residents of Vrmdža were shot in a reprisal in the village. After 1945 Vrmdža was part of socialist Yugoslavia.
