Geology and surface shapes

The municipality extends from the Molasse area of the Alpine foothills to the Steyrtal. The place is also called "The Gate to the Steyrtal". The sediments of the flysch zone are deposits of a sea from the Upper Cretaceous on the one hand, and marl and sandstone sediments from the Old Tertiary on the other . The landscape here in Waldneukirchen was decisively shaped in the Quaternary , namely in the Ice Ages . In the cold times of the Günz , Mindel and Riss ice ages, the Krems glacier, coming from the south, pushed with its huge glacier tongue far into the Alpine foothills and deposited mighty moraines consisting of gravel, sand and clay in the municipality of Waldneukirchen . The glacier brooks, the forerunners of the Steyr , rising out of the ice , piled up bulkheads in the ice-free area during the cold times. During the warm periods, some of these gravel deposits are then cleared out through the cutting channels. Large parts of the northern plateau of the municipality belong to this gravel area of the elevated terrace above the Steyr river, to which the municipality extends in the south. At the time of the most recent glaciation ( Würm ), silt-rich cover layers were blown up in all ice-free (periglacial) parts of the plateau northwest of the Steyr. Today they represent the top layer of clay. The rainwater is not diverted into the depths as a result, but flows mostly in the municipality to the north via Fernbach, Binderbach into the Krems. In this way, the erosion has shaped the moat landscape so characteristic of the flysch. The agricultural soils in the municipality of Waldneukirchen consist - according to the explanations of the soil map 1: 25000 - in their A-horizons predominantly of loamy silt, are medium humus and lime-free, and clearly crumbly, the B-horizons are mostly loamy silt or sandy loam, which in is usually free of lime. Below that, from a depth of approx. 50 cm, lies the horizon with lime-free loamy silt.

climate

In terms of climate, the municipality - which has its own climate measuring station - lies in the transition from the relatively warm center of Upper Austria to the cooler subalpine area. Average values in January −2 ° C and in July below 19 ° C. On 30 to 35 days of the year there is frost all day, on 70 to 75 days the temperature passes through freezing point one or more times as alternating frost days . The duration of the vegetation period is about 230 days, with a total temperature of 3100 ° C p. a. achieved - this corresponds to the overall Austrian average for this altitude level. The data from one of the weather stations measuring in Waldneukirchen can be called up online. The data is updated every 10 minutes during the day.

history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria, the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century . Litter finds in the local area also indicate the presence of humans in the Neolithic period. The place name shows the old clearing activity on this area in the area of influence of the Kremsmünster Abbey . In 1337 there were so many settlers that a separate parish was founded. The old church, which dominates the village center, is based on much older remains of the foundation wall. There is also a second archaeologically interesting site on the slope of the Steyrtal, the so-called "Devil's Tower". Interesting discoveries were made at this place during an excavation campaign in 2002, which help shed light on the local history of the 14th century in this area. Since 1490 the place has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

The Waldneukirchen blacksmith Peter Schreckseisen, who between 1568 and 1585 became one of the main weapons producers for the Graz armory , where thousands of polearms - a large part of which were manufactured in Waldneukirchen - were hoarded and some are still preserved today, gained supraregional importance are.

In the new Waldneukirchen school building, the eventful development of a school that has existed in the village since 1774 is documented and shown on a timeline installed there. During the Napoleonic Wars , the place was occupied several times by troops. The community reform after the abolition of the manor in 1848 also made Waldneukirchen an independent community. In 1893, after long heated discussions, Waldneukirchen lost part of its municipality and 700 inhabitants to the then newly founded (neighboring) municipality of Adlwang. It is important to mention in this context that a voluntary fire brigade was founded in 1894 . In 2014 she celebrated her 120th anniversary - here with a video. In 1889 Waldneukirchen was connected to the Steyrtalbahn (although you had to descend from the center into the Steyrtal). It remained an important means of transport for commuters and students who attended secondary schools in Steyr until the 1970s.

With the First Republic in 1918, the place no longer belongs to the Archduchy of the Enns , but to the federal state of Upper Austria . Here, too, the history of the interwar period was shaped by economic crises, unemployment and political turmoil. The small rural community provided a minister of agriculture, Peter Mandorfer, between 1936 and 1938. After the connection of Austria to the German Reich on 13 March 1938, the place to "belonged Upper Danube ". In Waldneukirchen, too, the “exchange of the old political elites”, described by historians as typical for this period, took place (= the Christian socials of the corporate state were replaced by new Nazi functionaries).

After the liberation by American troops on May 5, 1945, Upper Austria was restored - which until the State Treaty of 1955 - then belonged to the American occupation zone (the Soviet occupation zone in Austria began 20 km further east near Steyr an der Enns ). The reconstruction period also brought major socio-economic changes to the place, which was previously mainly an agricultural area. The last agricultural structure survey in 1999 showed only 123 farms, of which 71 were still in full-time employment. Due to the structural reforms in the state infrastructure in the last decade, the place lost both its gendarmerie post and later its own post office. The new construction of a community center (with integrated quarters for the fire brigade and community medical practice) and the establishment of a local supplier (with many local products on offer) testify to the vitality of the place, even if there are unfortunately no more inns in the center of the community today.

Population development

In 2001 the community had 2254 inhabitants according to the census, in 2019 a little less: 2194. The population development since the 1st VZ 1869 (1732 Ew. Then, since then the population has been increasing slowly) and other socio-economic parameters for the community can be found in the. The Statistics.at test census 2006 showed that the employed population was 1,104 (employment rate of 51.3%); after the position in the job only 14% in agriculture and forestry, 25.7% in the production of goods. In 2017, the number of people employed in agriculture and forestry decreased to 8.2% (= 100 people)
