history

According to a document, there has been a church in Waldneukirchen since 1270. A document from 1337 proves that Waldneukirchen was its own parish early on. At that time the choir was built. The church was completed with the construction of a nave in 1457. The aisle was added in the 16th century. The Baroque era began in 1723. This can be seen on the Marien Altar and the tower dome. During the renovation after the fire on December 17, 1982, a large Gothic fresco was found on the right wall of the choir, depicting the Archangel Michael as the “weigher of the soul”. In the course of this renovation work, neo-GothicElements such as the pulpit and the Sacred Heart Altar removed. In addition, the old sacristy was converted into a weekday chapel and the wall to the chancel was opened. A new sacristy was added. The altar was consecrated in 1985 and the organ was consecrated in 1990 .

Church building

The two-bay choir from 1400 is shifted from the axis compared to the nave from the 15th century. It was built with a simple ribbed vault and a 5/8 end . The keystones in the choir are decorated with remarkable stone sculptures depicting St. Peter with arms raised in blessing, an angel blowing trumpets and a rosette symbolizing Mary . Behind the high altar is the fresco “The Beheading of Saint Paul at the Gates of Rome” from the Danube School around 1550. The three-bay nave and the two-bay aisle have ribbed vaults . The vaulted areas between the ribs are decorated with fresco flower ornaments from the 14th century. The three-axis, Gothic west gallery rests on a ribbed vault. The 47.3 Mater high church tower with a baroque onion dome made of wood stands in the southwest of the church in the extension of the aisle.

Furnishing

The neo-Gothic winged altar by Johann Rindt dates from 1868. The Marienaltar is in the Baroque style . The Madonna comes from the school of the artist Hans Spindler from the Garsten Abbey .

The south portal is decorated with romanized , wrought iron fittings. According to a legend, this gate was the castle gate of a "devil's tower". Today's portal with the fittings probably dates from the 16th century. Further investigations are still pending. Research by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna revealed that the door is made of 60-year-old larch wood.

In the attic of the church there is a pedal bike that was used as a crane for the construction of the church tower. It dates from 1723.

On the outside of the church there are some wrought iron crosses from the 18th and 19th centuries from the former cemetery.

The bell dates from around 1400.

In front of the church there are Gothic statues of Saints Peter and Paul .
