history

Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria , the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century . Since 1490 it has been assigned to the Principality of Austria ob der Enns . The first denser settlement took place around 1200 to 1300, partly in the forest and partly in caves directly on the Enns. As the population increased, the place got the name Großraming , probably in contrast to Kleinraming on the Ramingbach near Steyr . The local Ramingbach was originally called Rubinicha , Slovenian for 'Fischbach' - today it is called Neustiftbach after Maria Neustift . The place is called Röming, Remink, Raumnich . Abbot Berthold von Garsten had the area of Großraming cleared by his monks and built a farm on the left bank of the Enns, which was named Garstenau after the Garsten monastery . The first wooden church was already in place in Großraming around 1200 AD. In 1390 a place for a parsonage was bought, in 1392 the place became its own parish. In 1513 the stone church was built in the Gothic style, and in 1707 it was extended to the east in the Baroque style. In 1936 it was extended to the west (gallery and organ). The St. James is the patron saint of the church.

Großraming belongs to the Upper Austrian part of the Eisenwurzen , in which the small iron industry has played an important role since the Middle Ages . The iron from the Erzberg was smelted at the numerous mills . In addition, wood extraction played an important role, especially the rafting of firewood as far as Vienna as well as the extraction of charcoal for the Traunviertel and Upper Styrian industries.

Großraming was occupied several times during the Napoleonic Wars . The most important event of the 19th century was the construction of the Kronprinz Rudolf-Bahn (today's Rudolfsbahn ) in 1869.

Since 1918 it has belonged to the federal state of Upper Austria. After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . A sub-camp of the Mauthausen concentration camp was established. It was a labor camp and was used to build the Enns power station in Großraming. In addition, two bridges and the ash settlement were built to relocate the residents of the dammed houses. At the end of the Second World War , the American armed forces and the Red Army met on the Enns . From May 10 to June 27, 1945 Großraming was divided along the Enns geographical border . The northern Großraming (Hintstein, Oberer and Unterer Ort, Pechgraben, Neustiftgraben) was occupied by the Soviets, the southern part (Oberpleißa, Lumplgraben, Brunnbach, Rodelsbach) by the USA. After that, until the Austrian State Treaty was signed on May 15, 1955, Großraming was in the American zone of occupation .

Großraming was the location for the television series Die Landärztin .
