Péter Márki-Zay (born May 9, 1972 in Hódmezővásárhely ) is a Hungarian economist, politician and mayor of Hódmezővásárhely since 2018.

Life

After studying economics , electrical engineering and history , Péter Márki-Zay received his doctorate from the Péter Pázmány Catholic University . He is married to his former school colleague Felícia Vincze and has seven children. From 2004 to 2009 the family lived in Canada and the United States , where he worked in phone and auto sales and his wife trained as a midwife .

After his return he worked for the electricity company in Szeged . He was responsible for strategic planning and later for customer service management. Until 2014 he taught non-profit and business marketing topics at the University of Szeged . On February 25, 2018, he ran as an independent candidate for the mayor's office of the city of Hódmezővásárhely - otherwise always considered a Fidesz stronghold - and won the election because none of the other opposition parties had put up any candidates and he was therefore able to unite their votes for himself. The unexpected victory against the Fidesz candidate attracted international attention after parts of the Hungarian opposition and its media assumed that this would be important as a supposed 'precedent' for the parliamentary elections that would soon follow on April 8, 2018 (for example, was close to Jobbik Internet portal Alfahír mentioned "Orbáns Stalingrad"). However, this did not happen because the parliamentary elections in April turned out to be completely different (absolute majority for Fidesz, which has ruled since 2010, for the third time in a row).
