Jounieh , Arabic جونية, DMG Ǧūniya , is a city in Lebanon . Together with its suburbs, it has around 350,000 inhabitants and is located north of Beirut . The city was still a quiet fishing village in the middle of the 20th century. Due to the proximity to Beirut and the location in the bay below Harissa , a Christian pilgrimage site, Jounieh soon became a popular building area. The development goes along the coastal highway to the south into the capital, to the north the beach hotels of the upper category and high-rise residential buildings extend seamlessly to Byblos .

Buildings and meaning

Jounieh is a predominantly Christian city. Bkerke Monastery on a hill to the east of the city is the seat of the Patriarch of the Maronite Church , the largest Christian group in Lebanon. The Maronite Holy Spirit University is also located in the city .

Numerous beach cafes, bars , night clubs and luxury hotels have now established themselves. A marina with a base for the Lebanese Navy is part of the cityscape. There has been a cable car from Jounieh to the statue of the Virgin Mary in Harissa since 1965.

The archaeological site of Mayruba is nearby .
