Harissa (Lebanon).

Harissa is an important Christian pilgrimage site above the city of Jounieh , north of Beirut .

On top of the mountain is a 15-ton, white-colored bronze statue of the Virgin Mary ( Notre Dame du Liban ) stretching out her arms. It was made at the end of the 19th century and inaugurated in 1908.

There is a small chapel below the statue. A modern glass and concrete cathedral was built next to it. The Congregation of the Lebanese-Maronite Missionaries has essentially built the pilgrimage site in Harissa and looks after the pilgrims.

The monument is near the Bkerke Monastery , the seat of the Patriarch of the Maronite Church .

There is also a Basilica of St. Paul of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church on the premises .

On May 10, 1997 Pope John Paul II visited the place; on September 14 and 16, 2012, Harissa was the stop of Pope Benedict XVI 's visit to Lebanon .
