It belongs to the province of Sur Lípez .
The lake got its name because of its striking red color, which is caused by the predominant type of algae and the high mineral content of its water.
The lake is known for its large populations of flamingos of the three species Chileflamingo , Yellow-footed or Andean flamingo and James or short-billed flamingo .
The Laguna Colorada is very remote and therefore only accessible via jeep tours from Uyuni , Tupiza or San Pedro de Atacama .
