Melanie Klaffner (born May 22, 1990 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs ) is an Austrian tennis player .

Career

Thanks to her mother Luise's enthusiasm for tennis, Melanie Klaffner got her first tennis racket at the age of five. In 1998 she played her first tournament for ten-year-olds in Bad Hall , which she won. Then she finished third at the state championship in Wels. It was there that young trainers first became aware of her and so she joined the OÖTV squad in 1999. Klaffner trains with Eric van Harpen in Waldshut-Tiengen . She lives with her parents Luise and Gerhard Klaffner in Weyer , where she was born; her father is mayor there.

2004 to 2008

Klaffner made her first appearance in professional tennis in 2004 at the age of 14 in qualifying for the WTA tournament in Linz , where she lost to Magüi Serna . In 2005 she played three ITF tournaments, reaching the quarter-finals in Puerto Ordaz . In the 2006 season she won her first ITF tournament in Balş ; in the final she defeated Diana Buzean 6: 3, 6: 4. In 2006 she also had her first Fed Cup appearance; she played for the first time against a top 20 player, Ai Sugiyama , to whom she was defeated 5: 7, 1: 6.

In 2007 she won one ITF singles and two ITF doubles. In 2007 she was in the main field for the first time on the WTA Tour . She received wild cards for the WTA tournaments in Bad Gastein and Linz , where she failed in the opening round. In 2008 she won four ITF double titles and she celebrated her first win on the WTA Tour at the tournament in Bad Gastein against Lucie Šafářová .

2009 to 2013

In 2009 she reached two finals at ITF level, both of which she lost; in doubles she celebrated two tournament victories. In 2010 she came in the world rankings for the first time in the top 200. Therefore, in three WTA tournaments and one Grand Slam tournament, she tried to qualify to reach the main draw, without success. However, she won two singles and two doubles titles at ITF tournaments.

In 2011 she won two ITF double titles. She was less successful in singles; she only reached one ITF semi-finals. As a result, she fell out of the top 300 in the world rankings. In 2012, she won two singles and two doubles titles at ITF tournaments. In 2013 she had her most successful season to date; she won five ITF singles titles and was again in the top 200.

Since 2014

In 2014 she played for the first time qualifying for the Australian Open and the French Open . However, they failed in the first round. On January 27, 2014, she achieved her highest world ranking with rank 175. In 2014 she only reached one ITF semi-finals, so she fell out of the top 300 again.

In 2015 she won the singles and doubles competition at the ITF tournament in Sharm El-Sheikh in February and the individual title at the ITF tournaments in Casablanca and Cairo in autumn .

Fed Cup

Melanie Klaffner made her debut in the Fed Cup at the age of 16 . She played a singles and a doubles game against Japan , which she lost both. In 2007 Austria played in Dornbirn against Australia in World Group II. Klaffner played doubles with Yvonne Meusburger ; they lost 4: 6, 3: 6. Nevertheless, Austria won 4-1 and was able to play against Israel for promotion to World Group I. Your record in the Fed Cup now shows 15 wins and 16 defeats.
