Sandra Klemenschits (born November 13, 1982 in Vienna ) is a former Austrian tennis player .

Career

Sandra Klemenschits and her twin sister Daniela formed one of the strongest women's doubles in Austria until 2006. Both played two games in the Fed Cup in 2005 and together won 23 tournaments at ITF level. In August 2005 they reached number 95 in the WTA world rankings .

Both sisters fell ill with cancer of the abdomen ( squamous cell cancer ) and therefore had to interrupt their careers. Daniela, whose disease was already too advanced, died on April 9th, 2008. The fate of the twin sisters sparked a worldwide media coverage when, among other things, on the initiative of Barbara Schett, a fundraising campaign on the WTA Tour and the ATP Tour came about The proceeds from the costly treatment of the sisters could be financed.

After her recovery, Sandra Klemenschits returned to the tour in July 2008 at the WTA tournament in Bad Gastein . At the side of Marlene Weingärtner , who also celebrated a comeback after her resignation in 2005 (but this already ended with this tournament), she came into the second round in doubles without a fight, in which the two of the pairing Xu Yifan / Zhang Shuai beat each other had to give.

Klemenschits won her first tournament victory after her comeback at the end of August 2008 alongside Barbara Hellwig at the ITF tournament in Pörtschach .

At the beginning of February 2009 Klemenschits was nominated for the Austrian team at the Fed Cup tournament of Group I (Zone Europe / Africa) in Tallinn . She won three of her four doubles games with alternating partners ( Nikola Hofmanova , Patricia Mayr , Melanie Klaffner ) and secured the team at Mayr's side with a victory in the relegation against Luxembourg to stay in the group.

In 2009, Klemenschits won a total of nine ITF tournaments, which brought her to a new highest ranking (90) in the double world rankings. She was less successful on the WTA Tour , where she only came once in round two. For the first time she was also in the main field of the US Open .

In 2010 Klemenschits was called up again as the best placed Austrian doubles player in the Fed Cup team, which fought in vain for promotion to World Group II at the beginning of February. The two games in which it was used (a win, a defeat) had no influence on the outcome of the group encounters that had already been decided. During her appearances on the WTA Tour, Klemenschits reached the second round three times this season, and won four titles in tournaments at ITF level. At the end of the season she was in the double world rankings in 114th place.

At the beginning of February 2011, Klemenschits was part of the Fed Cup team, which was able to avoid relegation at the qualifying games for Europe / Africa Group I. She won two of her four encounters. Otherwise, 2011 began with little success for her, until she found her old strength on sand in Morocco. In April, she won an ITF tournament in Casablanca alongside Kristina Mladenovic , and then advanced to the final of the WTA tournament in Fès the following week with Nina Bratchikova . At the French Open and Wimbledon , she was eliminated in the first round. At the Generali Ladies Linz 2011 she reached the semi-finals in a team with Mervana Jugić-Salkić . At the ITF level, she won two tournaments in 2011. At the end of the year she was 82nd in the double world rankings.

In early February 2012, Klemenschits was used twice at the qualifying games of the Austrian Fed Cup team on the side of Tamira Paszek , with one win and one loss. Her best results this year were two titles in ITF tournaments.

In July 2013, Klemenschits celebrated her greatest success to date by winning the WTA tournament in Bad Gastein alongside Andreja Klepač . She also won an ITF tournament in 2013, also with Klepač. In Wimbledon (with Romina Oprandi ) and at the US Open (with Andreja Klepač) she reached round two, it was her best result so far in a Grand Slam tournament .

Her best result of the 2014 season was winning an ITF tournament; at the end of the year Klemenschits was in 142nd place in the double world rankings. In 2015 she could not win a tournament and fell back to 184th place in the world rankings by the end of the year.

Sandra Klemenschits ended her career in October 2016 due to heel problems. She played her last game on the side of Patty Schnyder at the WTA tournament in Linz ; after completion of this tournament she was 336th in the double world rankings.
