Marlene Weingärtner (born January 30, 1980 in Heidelberg ) is a former German tennis player .

Career

Weingärtner, whose parents are Romanian Germans ( Banat Swabians ), began playing tennis at the age of eight and was able to record his first successes at an early age. With the juniors, she was in the final of the French Open , US Open and Australian Open .

In her career she won four double titles, three of them on the ITF tournaments and one on the WTA tour . She reached her highest place in the world rankings in 2002 in singles with 36th place, in the double world rankings she was led in January 2005 in 34th place. She lost her only WTA individual final in 2004 in Bali against Svetlana Kuznetsova . From 1999 to 2004 Weingärtner always ended the season in the top 100 and twice in the top 50.

In 2003 she was able to defeat the defending champion and then number 3, Jennifer Capriati , in the first round after falling behind the set at the Australian Open . Some of the players she has beaten during her career include Arantxa Sánchez Vicario , Sandrine Testud , Nadja Petrowa , Amanda Coetzer , Conchita Martínez and Martina Hingis . Against Petrowa, Coetzer and Sánchez Vicario she has positive match points (2: 1, 2: 1 and 2: 0).

In 2004 she became German team champion with TC Moers 08 in the tennis Bundesliga .

Weingärtner ended her sporting career in 2005 due to injury. Her last match was a 2-6, 6-0 defeat against Sun Tiantian in qualifying for the US Open in September, the last win (6-1, 6-2, 6: 2) in February 2005 in Pattaya against Martina Hingis .

At the WTA tournament in Bad Gastein in July 2008, she took part in a professional tournament one last time. At the side of Sandra Klemenschits , who had recovered from serious cancer , she survived the first round in doubles without a fight, in the second round the two of the Chinese pairing Xu Yifan / Zhang Shuai had to admit defeat.

Private

In addition to her tennis career, she was artistically active; she signed her pictures with the artist name Marwei .

Following the end of her career, Marlene Weingärtner began studying medicine at Ulm University , which she completed in November 2013. She now works as a resident doctor and osteopath .
