Carla Suárez Navarro (born September 3, 1988 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ) is a Spanish tennis player .

Career

Suárez Navarro, who started tennis at the age of nine, gained her first experience on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour in 2005 and immediately won her first tournament at her home tournament in Gran Canaria. In 2007 she moved from the Canary Islands to Barcelona to train at a tennis academy. In the same year, the first titles in tournaments of the $ 25,000 category followed and their first participation in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament in New York .

Early successes and injury setbacks: 2008–2012

After she started the year with a semifinal participation in Bogotá , Suárez Navarro was able to move into the quarterfinals on her first appearance at the French Open . After surviving the qualification, she defeated the former number one, Amélie Mauresmo , 6: 3, 6: 4 in round two . In the quarterfinals she was then defeated by Jelena Janković 3: 6, 2: 6. In Wimbledon , the renewal against Janković followed in round two. Although she ended the year with six defeats in a row, she was in the top 50 of the world rankings for the first time at the end of the season .

At the Australian Open in 2009, she defeated the sixth seeded Venus Williams in round two . This was followed by victories over their compatriots María José Martínez Sánchez and Anabel Medina Garrigues . Suárez Navarro then lost in the quarter-finals with 2: 6 and 2: 6 against the fourth seeded Jelena Dementjewa . In Marbella she then reached her first WTA final, in which she was stopped once again by Janković, followed by the semifinals in Barcelona and her first entry into the third round of Wimbledon , in which she was eliminated against Venus Williams. After a temporary best ranking of 22, she finished in the top 50 of the world rankings in 2009 for the second year in a row. The 2010 season began again promisingly for Suárez Navarro with reaching the third round in Melbourne and another finals in Marbella , where she had to admit defeat this time Flavia Pennetta . At the tournament in Fès she suffered a protracted ankle injury, from which she returned at the French Open , but was eliminated in the first round and then paused again until the US Open , where she again failed at the start. In the world rankings, Suárez Navarro then fell out of the top 50 in the world.

In 2011 she suffered an elbow injury in Acapulco , which put her out of action for several months, which is why she was unable to compete in Paris . The Spaniard tried to fight her way back through tournaments on the ITF tour and reached the round of 16 for the first time at the US Open in September , in which she was defeated by Andrea Petković . The following season she was in Oeiras after more than two years in a WTA final, but lost in three sets against Kaia Kanepi . At the French Open she got into the third round, at the Olympic Games in London she was eliminated at the start against Samantha Stosur . She achieved her best result of the season in Beijing , where she reached the quarter-finals of a tournament in the Premier Mandatory category for the first time after victories over Petra Kvitová and Jelena Janković.

Return to the extended world elite: 2013–2014

2013 at Wimbledon

Suárez Navarro was able to confirm her rising form the following year, when she reached the quarter-finals in Rome for the first time after two more lost WTA finals against Sara Errani in Acapulco and against Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova in Oeiras and then advanced to the second round in both Paris and London , where she could only be beaten by Sara Errani and Petra Kvitová. At the US Open 2013 , she even made it into the quarter-finals for the first time, but could not win a single game against Serena Williams . Nevertheless, she finished the season in the top 20 of the world rankings for the first time.

In 2014, Suárez Navarro then succeeded in Oeiras after winning the final over Svetlana Kuznetsova in the fifth attempt to win her first WTA title. In Rome , as at the French Open , where she finally failed to Eugenie Bouchard , she reached the quarter-finals. In doubles , she reached the semifinals with her compatriot Garbiñe Muguruza , in which the two were defeated in three sets by the later Grand Slam winners Peng Shuai and Hsieh Su-wei . Before that, she and her compatriot had already played in the final in Madrid , which they lost to Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci . In Stanford they won together for the first time at a tournament of the premier category; for Suárez Navarro it was the first WTA title ever. She also made two more quarter-finals at the Rogers Cup in Montreal and Tokyo on hard court . In doubles, she and Garbiñe Muguruza qualified for the WTA Championships in Singapore at the end of the season . There they failed in the competition for the best eight women's doubles in the quarterfinals again to Hsieh Su-wei and Peng Shuai.

Promotion to 10-player: 2015-2016

After Suárez Navarro was eliminated from Carina Witthöft in the first round without a chance in Melbourne in early 2015 , she started a series of eight tournaments in a row, in which she reached at least the quarter-finals. So she first reached her seventh WTA final in Antwerp , but could not play for the final against Andrea Petković due to a neck injury. In Indian Wells and Madrid , she made it to the quarter-finals for the first time. But her biggest successes of the season she celebrated in Miami and Rome , where she moved into the final after successes over Agnieszka Radwańska and Venus Williams as well as Petra Kvitová and Simona Halep , but lost both times. In the hard court tournament, Serena Williams proved to be too strong and in Italy it was Maria Sharapova who knocked her down in three sets. Nevertheless, the Spaniard was listed in the top 10 for the first time after the clay court season. In doubles, she and Muguruza won her second title in Birmingham after losing two finals in Dubai and Madrid , which was followed by her biggest title to date in Tokyo after a two-set win over second-placed Taiwanese Chan Yung-jan and Chan Hao-ching .

In the second half of the year, Suarez Navarro could not begin to maintain their services and received seven first-round defeats in a row from Eastbourne , including at Wimbledon and the US Open . Nevertheless, she finished the season on world number 13 and qualified for the Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, where she was defeated by Elina Switolina and thus eliminated in the group stage. As in the previous year, she started in doubles alongside Muguruza at the 2015 WTA Championships in Singapore. Jan Yung-two group stage victories against Chan and Chan Hao-ching and Caroline Garcia and Katarina Srebotnik , they moved first into the semi-finals, they against Andrea Hlaváčková and Lucie Hradecká won before in the final of the world ranking leader Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza defeated were.

2016 Suárez Navarro played her most consistent season throughout. In all four Grand Slam tournaments, she reached at least the last sixteen, at the Australian Open even the quarter-finals. In addition, she was able to celebrate her biggest WTA title in Doha after beating Jeļena Ostapenko in the final . In the following week she achieved her best world ranking position to date with sixth place. She also reached the quarterfinals of Cincinnati for the first time and the third round at the tennis tournament of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, in which she failed after successes over Ana Ivanović and Ana Konjuh at Madison Keys . In doubles , she came together with Garbiñe Muguruza in fourth place up to the quarter-finals, where they were defeated by the eventual winners Yekaterina Makarowa and Jelena Wesnina from Russia .

Since 2017

In 2017, Suárez Navarro only reached two semi-finals at smaller WTA tournaments in Monterrey and Bucharest . At the French Open , she came back to the round of 16, in which she had no chance against Simona Halep, as well as in New York , where she lost to Venus Williams in three sets. In the following year, the Spaniard was again in significantly better shape and advanced both at the Australian Open , where she failed to Caroline Wozniacki after victories over Kaia Kanepi and Anett Kontaveit , and at the US Open , where she, among others, Caroline Garcia and Marija Sharapova was able to beat before she lost again to Madison Keys, up to the quarter-finals and returned to the top 30 in the world rankings. In addition, after 2015 she was back in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells and Madrid , but lost there against Venus Williams and Caroline Garcia. In New Haven she reached her last final on the WTA Tour and benefited from the task of three opponents in the course of the tournament before she lost to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets in the final .

For the 2019 season, Suárez Navarro reduced her appearances on the WTA Tour almost exclusively to participating in larger tournaments. She achieved only two quarter-finals in Dubai and San José . In Wimbledon she reached the fourth round again and lost there again to Serena Williams, in New York she had to give up in the first round against Tímea Babos . At the end of the year, she announced that she would retire from competitive sports after the 2020 season.

In 2008, Suárez Navarro made her debut for the Spanish Fed Cup team in the 3-2 quarter-final victory over Italy . Since then, she has played 29 singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win 18 (individual balance: 17: 8).
