Consular law

Consular law , consular law is the entirety of the legal norms that regulate the activity of consular missions abroad ( consular missions ).

Consular law is a legal area of international law . The Vienna Convention on Consular Relations (WÜK) codified the customary law developed consular law. It was completed in Vienna on April 24, 1963 following preparatory work by the UN International Law Commission and has been in force since 1967 . The agreement regulates consular traffic (including immunities of consuls and diplomats ).

Sub-areas

A distinction can be made between international and national consular law:

  • International consular law (international law) regulates norms on the international level (of the states).
  • National consular law is part of administrative law and regulates the consular service (foreign service), competencies and procedures, the consular ranks (civil servant career), etc.
