Hsieh Su-wei ( Chinese  謝淑薇  /  谢淑薇 , Pinyin Xiè Shúwēi ; born January 4, 1986 in Taipei ) is a Taiwanese tennis player and current number one in the tennis world rankings in women's doubles. At the side of her Chinese doubles partner Peng Shuai , she won the Grand Slam tournaments in Wimbledon (2013) and Paris (2014) as well as the 2013 WTA Championships in Istanbul. In 2019 she won another Grand Slam title at Wimbledon with her new doubles partner Barbora Strýcová .

Career

2001 to 2004

Hsieh, who has six siblings, was introduced to tennis at the age of five by her father, who trained her for many years. She already attracted attention as a junior when she reached the quarter-finals in the junior women competition of the Australian Open in 2001 and later won the renowned Osaka Mayor's Cup together with her compatriot Chan Chin-wei . Her first experience that same year was on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour , where she won five titles by the end of the year, including a $ 25,000 tournament in Peachtree City . On her debut on the WTA tour in Bali , she immediately qualified for the main draw and made it to the semi-finals, where she was defeated by the eventual winner Angelique Widjaja in just three sets. At the subsequent WTA tournament in Pattaya , coming again from qualification, she made it into the quarter-finals and ended the season among the top 200 in the tennis world rankings . In 2002 Hsieh made her debut in the qualifying rounds of all four Grand Slam tournaments and achieved her best position in the junior tennis world rankings with ninth place.

In 2003 Hsieh made his debut against Indonesia for the first time for the Taiwanese Fed Cup team . Since then she has contested 33 singles and doubles for her country, of which she has won 21 (individual balance 15:10).

2005 to 2007

In the next two years it became quiet around her; it was not until 2005 that it returned with four other ITF titles in the $ 25,000 category. In addition, she managed to qualify for the main round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in New York , but she had no chance at the start against Katarina Srebotnik . Nevertheless, Hsieh returned to the top 200 in the world rankings at the end of the season. In 2006, she reached her biggest final to date in a tournament in the $ 75,000 category in her hometown of Kaohsiung , which she lost to compatriot Chan Yung-jan . The following year she won her first title outside of the Asia-Pacific region in Redding in the USA and reached the peloton for the first time in Paris and London , where she was eliminated in the first round. At the China Open in Beijing she won her first WTA title in doubles alongside Chuang Chia-jung . In the same month, the two also triumphed in Seoul , so that Hsieh ended the season in the top 100 of the double world rankings for the first time.

2008 to 2011

2008 was followed for Hsieh international breakthrough when they at the Australian Open as a qualifier reached the knockout stages and only from Justine Henin was stopped. Even though she only appeared sporadically on the WTA tour later in the year, she ended the season in which she was able to triumph in three other ITF tournaments in the $ 25,000 category in Japan for the first time in the top 100 of the world rankings . She also made it into the top 40 of the tennis world rankings for the first time in doubles, after she won her third WTA title with Peng Shuai in Bali and then defended her title together with Chuang in Seoul . The following year, Hsieh began to focus more on doubles. At the beginning of the season, she teamed up with Peng Shuai for a full year for the first time and won her first double title at a tournament in the premier category in Sydney . This was followed in May for the two of them the triumph in Rome and in October the win of the Premier-Mandatory tournament in Beijing as well as the entry into the semi-finals of the French Open , their greatest success in doubles up to now. In the mixed competition at the US Open , she and Kevin Ullyett made it into the last four. At the end of the year, Hsieh was listed in the top 10 of the double world rankings for the first time. Hsieh's individual performances suffered from the successes in doubles, especially since she was always eliminated in the qualification in the highly endowed tournaments due to her low individual ranking and could hardly collect any points. At the end of the year, she even dropped out of the top 300 with just nine wins this season in the world rankings. 2010 marked the low point in Hsieh's career as a single player. In her only appearance in the main draw of a WTA tournament in Guangzhou , she failed at the start and did not get beyond a single semi-final at an ITF tournament in the $ 25,000 category throughout the season. The following year she was able to reconnect to the WTA tour with three ITF titles, including her largest to date at a tournament in the $ 75,000 category in Beijing . In the mixed competition at Wimbledon she reached the semi-finals together with Paul Hanley , in Guangzhou she won her eighth WTA double title with Zheng Saisai .

2012 to 2017

In 2012, Hsieh had the unexpected breakthrough in singles. First she was in Pattaya after an eleven-year break in the semifinals of a WTA tournament. In Kuala Lumpur she then won her first WTA individual title, benefiting from Agnieszka Radwańska's short-term quarter-final withdrawal and from Petra Martić's injury-related abandonment in the final. This was followed in September in Guangzhou by her second triumph after a final victory over Laura Robson . At the Olympic Games she was eliminated in the singles in the first round against her long-time doubles partner Peng, in doubles she reached the quarter-finals together with Chuang, in which she lost to the later silver medalists Andrea Hlaváčková and Lucie Hradecká from the Czech Republic . She also won two high-value ITF tournaments in the $ 100,000 category in Ningbo and Suzhou and ended the season in the world's top 30 for the first time. As a result, she qualified for the International Tournament of Champions 2012 in Sofia, where she was eliminated in the group stage after a win against Daniela Hantuchová and two defeats against Caroline Wozniacki and Roberta Vinci . In doubles, however, she could only win one title in Birmingham alongside Tímea Babos . Her best result there was the semi-finals at the US Open together with Anabel Medina Garrigues .

In February 2013, she initially achieved her best individual world ranking position to date with 23rd place. Nevertheless, Hsieh's focus this year was primarily on doubles. Together with Peng Shuai, with whom she won major tournaments in 2009, she triumphed in Wimbledon after beating Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua for the first time in a Grand Slam tournament and also won the 2013 WTA Championships in Istanbul at the end of the season . In addition, the two won for the second time in Rome and also secured the title at the mandatory tournament in Cincinnati . In 2014 they won the Doha tournament , triumphed in Indian Wells and won their second Grand Slam title at the French Open , where they beat Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci in the final . In May, Hsieh reached number one in the double world rankings as the 32nd player and the first Taiwanese woman ever .

In the individual world, the years after 2012 were much less successful and Hsieh fell back out of the top 100 in the individual world rankings. It wasn't until 2015 that she reached the semifinals in Kuala Lumpur and won three more ITF tournaments by the end of the season, including another in the $ 100,000 category in Nanjing . In 2016 she reached a WTA semi-finals at her home tournament in Kaohsiung , won the final of the $ 100,000 tournament in Marseille and won the season finale in Dubai . In 2017 she reached the final at a tournament of the WTA Challenger Series in Hua Hin , but lost to Belinda Bencic in straight sets. In addition, she was able to land her first success against a top 10 player in Paris with a first round win over Johanna Konta and move into the third round for the first time. Also in doubles, Hsieh went through a weaker period after breaking up her extremely successful sporting collaboration with Peng. Only in smaller tournaments in the international category was she able to win more titles with changing partners, for example in Budapest , where she triumphed with Oksana Kalashnikova in 2017 , or in Biel , where she was victorious two months later alongside Monica Niculescu . Together with Pablo Cuevas , she achieved her third Grand Slam semi-final in mixed at the Australian Open .

Since 2018

In 2018, Hsieh made an impressive return on the WTA tour. In addition to her third WTA title in Hiroshima , where she defeated Amanda Anisimova in the final, she also surprised at the Grand Slams. At the Australian Open she reached the last sixteen again after ten years, beating world number three Garbiñe Muguruza in the second round , before losing to Angelique Kerber in the fourth round . Also in Wimbledon , after a third round success over world number one Simona Halep , she was able to advance to the second round, where she failed to Dominika Cibulková . In addition, she reached the semi-finals at four other WTA tournaments in Auckland , Rabat , Seoul and Tianjin and ended the season in the top 30 in the world for the first time since 2012. There was also an upward trend in doubles after winning together with Barbora Strýcová for the second time in Indian Wells .

In the following year, the two formed a permanent pairing and won four titles together. After tournament victories in Dubai , Madrid and Birmingham , Hsieh won the third Grand Slam title in Wimbledon after winning the final over Gabriela Dabrowski and Xu Yifan . In singles, she made it to the semi-finals again at the start in Auckland, before she achieved her best result of the season in Dubai after two more top 10 wins against Angelique Kerber and Karolína Plíšková with the move into the round of the last four, in which she was defeated by Petra Kvitová . In Miami , where she reached the quarterfinals for the first time, she succeeded against Naomi Osaka her second success against a reigning world number one. She was able to finish the season again in the top 40 in the world, also because she survived the opening round of all four Grand Slam tournaments for the first time.

Before the corona-related 2020 season end, Hsieh and Strýcová won in Brisbane , Dubai and Doha . At the Australian Open , the two made it to the final, but lost there as well as in the final of the WTA Championships 2019 in Shenzhen against Kristina Mladenovic and Tímea Babos. Nevertheless, Hsieh again took the lead in the double world rankings in March.
