The Tennis Club Rüppurr 1929 e. V. is a tennis club from the Karlsruhe district of Rüppurr , which has become known nationwide due to its longstanding membership in the men's tennis league . Today the club's flagship is the women's team, which became German champions in 2006 and 2007 . In the Bundesliga the club competes under the name TC Rüppurr Karlsruhe .
Club history
The association was founded in 1929. In 1930 the first two places were opened where places 1 and 2 are still today.
The game was stopped in 1942 because of the Second World War . After the war it was initially resumed under the umbrella of the neighboring club TuS Rüppurr before it was re-established as an independent club in 1952.
In the following decades the association grew steadily. In 1977 there were over 500 members who participated in 14 teams in the official game operation. The facility, which has had eight seats since 1973, reached its capacity limits due to the high demand outside of team games. Since no expansion was possible on site, the management board considered relocating the entire system to the outskirts of Rüppurr, about 1 km away. However, the project was delayed several times and kept the association and residents busy for many years. Finally, the administrative court of Baden-Württemberg declared the development plan approved by the city invalid, whereupon the project was abandoned. The eight clay courts of the facility are therefore still in their original location today.
In 1973, TC Rüppurr also opened a two-field hall about 500 m from the outdoor courts and the clubhouse, so that club members have been able to play tennis all year round since then.
In the 2000s, extensive renovations and modernizations were carried out on the clubhouse, hall and outdoor area.
Professional sport
Men's
In the 1970s, the first men's team rose continuously and reached the 1st Bundesliga in 1977. This was followed by fourteen years of membership in the 1st Bundesliga, in which the club gained notoriety throughout Germany under its long-time president and current honorary president Heinz Steinbach. The greatest successes were reaching third place in the German team championships in 1980, 1984 and 1986. During this time, numerous tennis greats played in the club, including the German Davis Cup player Jürgen Faßbender as a long-time supporter of the Bundesliga team .
From 1993 the team belonged to the Regionalliga, at that time the second highest division. Renewed promotion to the Bundesliga in 1998 was followed by immediate relegation to the newly formed 2nd Bundesliga South, in which the team remained until 2004.
Although they rose again to the 1st Bundesliga in 2004, the board decided after just one year to withdraw the team from the professional field. The background was on the one hand extensive rule changes in the Bundesliga, which meant that the club was no longer able to finance a competitive team, and on the other hand the fact that they wanted to concentrate on the women's team that had recently been promoted to the Bundesliga.
Ladies
The first women's team reached their highest level up to that point in 2003 when they were promoted to the third highest division. When the promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga succeeded in 2004, both the women's and men's teams were in a professional league for the first time, just in time for the club's 75th anniversary. With the third promotion in a row, the women's team reached the 1st Bundesliga in 2005. As it became clear during this season that two teams in the professional area could not be financed, the board decided in autumn 2005 to focus entirely on promoting the women's team in the future.
In 2006, in their first season in the 1st Bundesliga, the women managed to win the German championship, which the men had always been denied. The title was successfully defended in the 2007 season . During this time, numerous greats of international women's tennis played for TC Rüppurr, including Anna-Lena Grönefeld (No. 14 in the world rankings in 2006 ) and Sybille Bammer (No. 19 in the world rankings in 2007). In 2008 the women became runner-up; on the last day of the match they had to admit defeat to TC Zamek Benrath, who became champion.
In the following years, the team could not participate in the fight for the German championship, but they always managed to stay up until 2012. In the 2012 season , she was relegated from bottom of the table in the 2nd Bundesliga, in whose southern season she played in 2013 and 2014 . The targeted resurgence was just missed with second place in the table in both years. However, TC Bocholt announced the withdrawal of its team from the 1st Bundesliga at the end of 2014, so that TC Rüppurr was able to rise as the best-placed successor.
In the first season after the promotion, 2015, the team immediately reached second place in the 1st Bundesliga. In 2016, the second place was achieved again, as the top game against Regensburg ended 3: 6 after losing four match-tie breaks. The 2017 season ended in fifth place in the table. In 2018, however, the TC Rüppurr was runner-up again, tied with the master Regensburg.
