Wang Yafan ( Chinese  王雅 繁 , Pinyin Wáng Yǎfán ; born April 30, 1994 in Nanjing ) is a Chinese tennis player .

Career

Wang started playing tennis at the age of nine and prefers hard courts. So far, she has won ten singles and six doubles titles on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour . In 2010 she gained her first professional experience there and in 2013 was able to celebrate her first smaller titles at tournaments in South Korea.

Her first success in a tournament in the $ 25,000 category followed in Phuket the following year . Rapid developments Wang received from the Chinese Tennis Association after numerous wild cards to participate in the main draw of tournaments of the WTA Challenger Series and the WTA tour, taking in Guangzhou reached her first semifinal immediately before the semi-final of the later winner to Monica Niculescu with 0: 6 and 2: 6 lost. At the Australian Open 2015 she competed for the first time in the qualification for the finals of a Grand Slam tournament, where she failed in the final round, as well as in the qualification for the major Chinese tournaments in Wuhan and Beijing .

However, Wang had her first successes on the WTA tour in doubles. In Kuala Lumpur , she won her first title alongside her compatriot Liang Chen after beating the Ukrainians Julija Bejhelsymer and Olha Sawtschuk in the final . At the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, where the two only entered the field with a wildcard, they surprisingly triumphed in the final against the Spanish doubles Anabel Medina Garrigues and Arantxa Parra Santonja .

In 2016 she was able to qualify for the main draw in Melbourne for the first time after three wins, but lost in the first round in three sets against Maria Sakkari . Her first major round success in a Grand Slam tournament came in New York when she defeated Alison Van Uytvanck in straight sets in the first round before she lost to Lessja Zurenko . She also made her debut in the main field at the China Open in Beijing after qualifying, where she also reached the second round after a smooth win against Madison Brengle . Due to an injury she sustained in late 2016, Wang was only able to return to the ITF tour with interruptions in July. There she won two more titles in Tianjin in 2017 and, for the first time, at a tournament in the $ 50,000 category in Liuzhou . In addition, she came in Nanchang equipped with a wildcard to the semi-finals, where she lost to Nao Hibino .

After reaching another WTA semi-final in Taiwan and the fourth round in Miami after victories against Markéta Vondroušová , Carla Suárez Navarro and Alison Riske , Wang made the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time in 2018 . At the end of the year she successfully defended her title in Liuzhou and ended the year in the top 100 in the world for the first time. In doubles, she won her third WTA title together with Duan Yingying at the 2018 Taiwan Open . In the following season she was able to establish herself permanently on the WTA Tour with constant results. After another semi-final at the beginning of the year in Shenzhen , where she was only stopped by Aryna Sabalenka , she celebrated her greatest success to date with triumph at the WTA tournament in Acapulco after a three-set win in the final over Sofia Kenin . In the world rankings for the first time in the top 50, she reached the round of 16 again in Miami , where she beat Elina Switolina for the first time in the second round, a top 10 player. After more mixed results in the middle of the year on clay courts and grass, she found her way back to her strong early form in Asia. So she made it to the last four in Seoul and won a match in the main draw in both Wuhan and Beijing . In 2019 she was able to end the season in the top 50 in the world for the first time.

In 2016, Wang made her debut for the Chinese Fed Cup team . Since then, she has contested eleven matches in singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win nine (individual balance 3: 2). In doubles, she is so far unbeaten in six games.
