In addition, the archaeologists discovered a city from the Bronze Age (16th century BC) on the Zhengzhou area . It was a fortified capital of the Shang Dynasty . The Shanghai site of Zhengzhou has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China since 1961 .

The city and its surroundings suffered greatly during the Second Sino-Japanese War between 1937 and 1945.
