Pingdingshan
Pingdingshan ( Chinese 平顶山 市 , Pinyin Píngdǐngshān Shì ) is a district-free city with about 4.89 million inhabitants (end of 2003), of which 3.66 million farmers. 855,130 people live in the actual urban settlement area of Pingdingshan (2010 census). It is located in the Chinese province of Henan . It is the second most important coal city in the People's Republic of China. Pingdingshan lies at an altitude of almost 200 m and has a total area of 7,874 km². The name of the city means "mountain with the flat peak" and comes from a mountain whose peak actually forms a flat plateau. A staircase with symbolic, auspicious 666 steps leads up the mountain.
Administrative structure
Administratively, the city consists of four urban districts, two independent cities and four districts. These are:
- Xinhua District (新华 区), 157 km², 360,000 inhabitants;
- District Weidong (卫东区), km² 103, 290,000 inhabitants;
- Zhanhe District (湛河区), 124 km², 220,000 inhabitants;
- Shilong District (石龙 区), 35 km², 60,000 inhabitants;
- City of Wugang (舞钢 市), 640 km², 310,000 inhabitants;
- Ruzhou City (汝州市), 1,573 km², 960,000 inhabitants;
- Baofeng district (宝丰县), 722 km², 480,000 inhabitants;
- Ye County (叶县), 1,387 km², 820,000 inhabitants, capital: Kunyang Township (昆阳 镇);
- Lushan County (鲁山 县), 2,406 km², 830,000 inhabitants, capital: Luyang Street District (鲁 阳 街道);
- Jia County (郏 县), 727 km², 560,000 inhabitants.

The city is the seat of important coal works. Other important industrial plants belong to a tire plant. There is a large reservoir near the city, which is used for fish farming in addition to generating energy. Pingdingshan has technical colleges for teacher training and urban planning.
The transport links are sufficient for industrial companies. There is a motorway connection and a passenger train connection. Bus routes go to all major cities in the province. There is only one small main train station, which is not enough for a big city.
