Construction began in 2008. The design and planning was done by the Chicago architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill ( SOM for short ). The building is used in the lower area for business and office space and in the upper area for hotel rooms . SOM won several awards from various specialist journals and associations for the design.
architecture
The floor plan of the high-rise has the shape of an equilateral polygon . The tower looks almost round and tapers slightly towards the top. The facade elements contain both sun protection devices and light collectors that guide the sunlight into the hotel atrium . The building is reminiscent of a pagoda due to the outwardly curved shape of the facade elements .
