Naples ( English for Naples ) is a city and also the county seat of Collier County in the US state of Florida with 21,845 inhabitants (as of 2016).
geography
Naples is located in southwest Florida on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and about 170 km west of Miami . The city is after Immokalee the second largest settlement in the Naples-Immokalee-Marco Island Metropolitan Statistical Area , which corresponds to Collier County.
climate
The climate is subtropical and therefore warm all year round. Statistically it rains in the summer months - even if only briefly - on an average of 40% of the days. Daytime temperatures range from May to October at 31 ° C. The coldest months from December to February bring average daily temperatures of 24 ° C. In summer, the high humidity in particular means that the perceived temperatures are well above the 31 ° C mentioned above.
history
At the beginning of the 18th century, Indians from the Creek and Calusa tribe lived in the area . The Creek Indians, supported by the English, attacked the Calusa Indians in the Spanish- occupied part of Florida at regular intervals . The Calusa were exterminated by the middle of the 18th century. In 1877, the Philadelphia native Hamilton Disston bought a 300 km stretch of coast along the coast to the Gulf of Mexico from the state of Florida. The purchase price was 25 cents per parcel with 4000 m². These were then sold to immigrants for $ 10 and settlement began. But few lots were sold and the city's growth stagnated. In 1886 a group of investors from Kentucky around the former US Senator John Stuart Williams and the businessman Walter Haldeman also bought land from the city in order to build winter homes for wealthy business people from the north and the first small boom set in. The year 1886 is also officially considered the founding year of the city of Naples. The situation improved significantly in 1922 when the millionaire Barron Gift Collier, after whom the county is named, also bought land and built the Tamiami Trail through the Everglades at his own expense City could be reached in the normal way.
In 1926 Naples was connected to the railway network with its own ACL station and the city slowly began to develop, but still remained a fishing village and winter home until the 1950s. In 1927 the route from Punta Gorda to Marco Island was extended. This extension was shut down in 1944. Today the route from Arcadia via Punta Gorda and Fort Myers to Naples is operated by the Seminole Gulf Railway .
In 1960, almost half of all buildings in Naples and the surrounding area were destroyed by Hurricane Donna . The insurance payments and the rebuilding finally led to the hoped-for upswing. Naples has now developed into a small exclusive city.
