Arjuna Award
The Arjuna Award is a prize given to athletes in India for outstanding athletic performance. The award, a bronze statue of the Mahabharata hero Arjuna with a certificate and prize money of 300,000 rupees , has been awarded by the Indian government since 1961.
Over the years, the awarding of the prizes has also been expanded to include athletes from the era before the Arjuna Award. The number of award-winning sports has also increased; Meanwhile, prizes for disabled athletes are also awarded. In order to earn this award, an athlete must not only have performed well in his sport at an international level for three years, he must also excel through fairness and discipline .
Since 2001 the prize has only been awarded in sports that are performed on the following occasions or that meet the following criteria:
- Olympic Games / Asian Games / Commonwealth Games / World Championship Disciplines and Cricket
- native games
- Disabled sports
