Praveen Kumar (athlete)

Praveen Kumar ( Praveen Kumar Sobti; born December 6, 1947 in Sarhali , Punjab ) is a former Indian discus and hammer thrower . After his sporting career, he became a film actor and is politically active.

Life

Sports

In 1966 he won silver in the hammer throw at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston and was eighth in the discus throw. At the Asian Games in Bangkok he won the discus throw and took bronze in the hammer throw.

At the hammer throw at the Olympic Games in Mexico City in 1968 , he was eliminated from the qualification.

In 1970 he was fifth in hammer throw at the British Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh and defended his title in discus throw at the Asian Games in Bangkok .

In the discus throw at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, he did not get past the first round. At the Asian Athletics Championships in 1973 and at the Asian Games in 1974 in Tehran, he won silver. In 1975 he won the Asian Championships, in 1977 he was sixth at the Athletics World Cup in Düsseldorf , and in 1978 he was tenth at the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton .

In 1967 he was awarded the Arjuna Award .

Movie

His film career began in 1972 with a small role in Baldev Raj Chopras Dastaan . Praveen Kumar's best-known role is that of Pandavas Bhima in Chopra's 94-part television series Mahabharat (1988–1990), the most extensive film adaptation of the Indian national epic Mahabharata . Until the end of the 1990s, he mostly played small supporting roles.

politics

In the 2013 election for the Delhi Regional Parliament, he ran for the Aam Aadmi Party without success . A year later, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party .
