Shiny Kurisingal Abraham (born May 8, 1965 in Thodupuza, Idukki , Kerala , India ) is a former Indian athlete who specializes in middle-distance running.

Athletic career

Shiny Abraham's athletic career began during her school days at the Raja Sports School in Thiruvananthapuram , the capital of the state of Kerala. After graduating from high school, she studied and trained at Alphonsa College in Palai .

Abraham had specialized in the middle-distance run, especially the 800-meter distance, but also started over 400 meters. In 1981 she was the first Indian champion over 800 meters. Until 1995 she was the Indian champion over this distance every year. She completed one of her first international assignments at the Asian Games in Delhi in 1982 . In 1984 she traveled to the Los Angeles Olympics . She reached the semi-finals over 800 meters, making her the first Indian athlete to advance to a semi-final. With the 400-meter relay, she even reached the final and finished seventh.

In 1985 she became Asian champion over 800 meters and with the 4 x 400 meter relay. Over the 400 meter distance she won silver behind her teammate PT Usha . At the Asian Games in Seoul in 1986 , she won silver over 400 meters and gold with the relay. In the 800-meter run she was disqualified while in the lead because she had touched the inside of the track. Another Asian Cup followed in 1987, again with the relay. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 she failed over 800 meters and also with the relay in the first round.

At the Asian Championships in New Delhi in 1989 , Abraham achieved exactly the same successes as he did in 1985: gold over 800 meters and with the relay, silver behind Usha over 400 meters. In 1991 in Kuala Lumpur she was again with the Asian season champion. She also won over 400 meters. This time she won silver over 800 meters. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , Abraham only appeared in the 800-meter run and was eliminated in the first round. In Barcelona, ​​she was the first woman to carry the Indian flag into the stadium.

In 1994 she was finally able to win bronze over 800 meters and silver with the relay at the Asian Games in Hiroshima . Two bronze medals over 400 and 800 meters and a silver medal with the relay were added at the 1995 Asian Championships in Djakarta . She completed one of her last international assignments at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta . This time she was only used in the season that was eliminated in the preliminary round.

Private life

Shiny Abraham married the swimmer Cherian Wilson. The couple has three children. She works as general manager for the government organization Food Corporation of India .
