Hari Chand (born April 1, 1953 in Hoshiarpur , Punjab ) is a former Indian long-distance runner.

Career

Hari Chand first became known nationally in 1974 when he won the 10,000 meter run at a sporting event organized by the Indian police. In the same year he finished 2nd at the national championships. Chand was nominated for the Indian team of the Asian Athletics Championships in 1975 in Seoul . In the South Korean capital he was Asian champion over 10,000 meters. He won silver over 5000 meters. For his performance he was awarded the Arjuna Award .

In 1976 he traveled with the Indian team to the Olympic Games in Montreal . Chand only finished 8th in his preliminary run and was therefore unable to qualify for the final. At the Asian Games in Bangkok in 1978 , he managed a double victory over 10,000 and 5,000 meters.

Chand started training for the marathon. His participation in the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow was the first marathon for him in an international competition. Eleven minutes behind the winner ( Waldemar Cierpinski from the GDR) he finished 31st out of 53 athletes.
