Sunil Chhetri (born August 3, 1984 in Secunderabad , Andhra Pradesh , India ) is an Indian soccer player. The striker plays for India's selection . In the National Football League and the I-League he played at JCT Mills , East Bengal from Kolkata and Dempo SC from Goa before moving to Sporting Kansas City in the US League in 2010 . In 2011 he returned to India, where he played first for Chirag United SC and then for Mohun Bagan AC . For the 2012/13 season Chhetri moved to the second team of Sporting Lisbon . Chhetri is the record player and record scorer for the Indian national football team .

Career

At the age of eighteen, Chhetri signed with Mohun Bagan from Kolkata in 2002 , but he did not become a regular there and therefore moved three years later to league competitor JCT from Punjab . In the last season of the NFL (2006/07) the striker scored twelve goals for the Mills, Chhetri was also voted best player and best striker of the season this season.

In the first season of the I-League he scored seven more goals. After the end of the season Chhetri moved back to Kolkata and signed a contract with East Bengal, where he played fourteen games in one season and scored seven goals. In the following season he moved to Dempo SC, where he signed a two-year contract. In the 2009/10 season he scored eight times in thirteen games.

On March 24, 2010, he joined the Kansas City Wizards. He was the first Indian soccer player to play for a major league soccer club. He made his first game for the Wizards in the qualifier for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup against Colorado Rapids . He received a yellow card during the game and was substituted at half time. During the 2010 MLS season, he did not play a league game for Kansas City. On July 25, 2011, he played again in a friendly against Manchester United . He was then released for the Indian national team, which was preparing for the AFC Asian Cup. On February 11, 2011, he signed with the Indian first division club Chirag United, but then moved to Mohun Bagan AC on July 22, 2011 .

For the 2012/13 season he moves to Portugal to the second team ( Equipa B ) from Sporting Lisbon in the second Portuguese division .

National team

After taking part in the 2004 South Asian Games with the U-20 team, Chhetri was appointed to the national team for the first time in 2005. He scored his first goal in a friendly against Pakistan (final score 1: 1).

With the national team he took part in the Nehru Cup in 2007 and was able to take first place with the team after a 1-0 win over Syria . At the South Asian Cup, Chetri and the team reached the final, but lost 1-0 to the Maldives .

Chhetri had his greatest success so far with the Indian team at the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008 , where he scored the winning goal against Myanmar in the semifinals and paved India's way into the final. India won the final, held at Ambedkar Stadium , 4-1, with Chhetri scoring three goals. In 2009 he won the Nehru Cup again with India. In the second group game he scored his only tournament goal against Kyrgyzstan.

He was also nominated for the Indian squad at the AFC Asian Cup 2011 , with Chhetri scoring two goals in the finals. During the qualification for the AFC Challenge Cup 2012 he was captain of the national team.

At the 2011 South Asian Cup in his own country, Chhetri was the top scorer with seven goals and thus had a significant share in his team's title win.

In 2012 Chhetri won the Nehru Cup with the Indian team in the final against Cameroon 5-4 on penalties. He shared the title of top scorer with four goals. In 2018, he won the first ever Intercontinental Cup .

Trivia

Chhetri's parents are from Nepal . His father KB Chhetri was an officer in the Indian Army and his mother, Sushila Chhetri, played for the women's national soccer team of Nepal.
