Kenya was involved in the second and third game: A 2-1 win against New Zealand was followed by a 3-0 defeat against the Indian team, in which Chhetri scored two more goals. spectator

At the opening game (against India Taiwan) 2,569 spectators found their way into the stadium - mainly due to the commitment of a fan group called "Blue pilgrims" ( English Blue Pilgrims ). Captain Sunil Chhetri then appealed to the fans via social media: They may “abuse” or criticize the national team, but please come to the stadium for the next game against Kenya. This call was supported by other well-known Indian athletes from other sports, such as Sania Mirza (tennis) as well as Sachin Tendulkar , Suresh Raina , Krunal Pandya and Virat Kohli (all cricket). The effort had an effect and the game against Kenya was sold out.

Trivia

With his eight goals in the tournament, Sunil Chhetri increased his yield on the national team to 64 goals, which made him the second most successful goalscorer among active football players worldwide. At the end of the tournament, only Cristiano Ronaldo was ahead of him with 81 goals while he caught up with Lionel Messi .

During the tournament Chhetri completed his 100th appearance as a national player (in the game against Kenya); Jeje Lalpekhlua made his 50th appearance (against New Zealand).
