Geeta Kumari
Geeta Kumari (born December 15, 1988 ) is an Indian wrestler . She won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 55 kg body weight at the 2012 World Cup .
Career
Geeta Kumari (Phogat) grew up in Bhiwani in the Indian state of Haryana . She started there as a teenager together with her sister Babita Kumari, who was one year younger than her, in a wrestling club. Her first trainer was her father Mahabir Singh. The only 1.53 meter tall athlete wrestles in the weight class up to 55 kg, one weight class higher than her sister. She is a student. In the winners lists she usually only appears under the name "Geeta".
She already competed in her first international championship in 2003. In Feng Yuan City, Taiwan, she was Asian junior champion of the Cadets age group in the weight class up to 40 kg body weight. In 2005 she took 3rd place at the Asian Junior Championship in Jeju / South Korea in the weight class up to 51 kg and was again Asian Junior Champion with the Cadets. In 2008 she was also Asian champion in the juniors in the weight class up to 59 kg before the Mongolian Sorondsonboldyn Battsetseg . At the Junior World Championships she finished in 2005 in Vilnius in the weight class up to 51 kg and in 2008 in the weight class up to 59 kg fifth places.
In 2006, Geeta Kumari started at a world championship for women for the first time and took 7th place in Guangzhou / China in the weight class up to 55 kg with victories over Ainur Artikbajewa, Uzbekistan and Nghiem Thi Giang, Vietnam and a defeat against Jessica Bechtel from Germany. She did her next world championship again in 2009. She finished in Herning / Denmark in the weight class up to 55 kg after victories over Tamara Kasarjan, Uzbekistan, and Marwa Amrik, Tunisia, and a defeat against Tatjana Padilla , United States 10th place.
In 2010 Geeta Kumari won the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in front of Emily Bensted from Australia and Lovina Odohi Edward from Nigeria, but only came 7th at the Asian Games in November 2010 in Guangzhou.
At the 2011 World Cup in Istanbul, she first had two notable victories in the weight class up to 55 kg, over Jackeline Rentería from Colombia and Zhang Lan from China, then lost to Um Ji-eun from South Korea and Ida-Theres Nerell from Sweden and took 8th place. In December 2012 she won a bronze medal at the Asian Championships in Gumi / South Korea behind Kanako Murata, Japan and Tran Thi Dien Ninh from Vietnam.
In March 2012, Geeta Kumari in Astana won the ticket to the 2012 Olympic Games in London with a tournament victory in the weight class up to 55 kg before Um Ju-eun and Tran Thi Dien Ninh. At the Olympic Games itself, she delivered a courageous fight in her first encounter with fellow favorite Tonya Verbeek from Canada and only narrowly lost with 1: 2 rounds and 2: 4 points. Since Tonya Verbeek reached the final, she was able to continue in the consolation round, but lost the next fight against Tetjana Lasarewa from Ukraine and thus finished 13th. A more than conciliatory conclusion to 2012 was achieved at the World Championships in Stathcona County / Canada, because she won a World Championship bronze medal there behind Saori Yoshida , Japan and Helen Maroulis , United States, together with Maria Prevolaraki from Greece and left that way outstanding wrestlers like Natalja Sinischin , Ukraine, and Brittanee Laverdure , Canada, behind them.
