Babita Kumari (born November 20, 1989 ) is an Indian wrestler . She won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 51 kg body weight at the 2012 World Cup .

Career

Babita Kumari started wrestling as a teenager in 2000. She is the sister of Geeta Kumari , who is also a world class wrestler. She belongs to the Bhiwani Wrestling Club in the state of Haryana and was trained by her father Mahabir Singh at the beginning of her career. PR Sonchi has been her trainer since 2009. She is a student and stayed in Canada for a long time.

She made her first start at an international championship in 2005. She took second place in the Asian Junior Championship (age group Cadets) in the weight class up to 43 kg behind Yu Horiuchi from Japan. In 2006 she was then Asian champion in the same age group in Bangkok in the weight class up to 49 kg before Nodoka Nishi, Japan and Wang Yiaomei, China. In 2007 she was in Beijing behind the American Whitney Conder junior vice world champion in the weight class up to 51 kg and left such excellent wrestlers as Li Xiao from China and Oleksandra Kohut from Ukraine behind.

In 2007 Babita Kumari started for the first time in a world championship among seniors. She came here in Baku in the weight class up to 51 kg to a victory over Giorgiana Mihaela Radoi from Romania, but lost her next fight against Tatjana Amanschol-Bakatschuk from Kazakhstan and reached 9th place. In the Olympic year 2008 she was injured and therefore could not fight for a place at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

In 2009 she won the World Championships in Herning / Denmark over T. Andrintsalama, Madagascar and Maria Wilmowa from Russia, but then lost to Natalja Budu from Moldova. Since this did not reach the final battle, she was eliminated and came in 8th place. In December 2009 she won the Commonwealth Championship in Jalandhar, India in the weight class up to 51 kg in front of Mpho Madi from South Africa and Donna Robertson from Scotland. At the 2010 Asian Cup in New Delhi, she did not get on well and only finished 5th there. She also disappointed at the 2010 World Cup in Moscow and lost her first fight there against Roksana Zasina from Poland. She was eliminated because of that and only came in 13th place. In December 2010, however, she still had a sense of achievement, because she came in second at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi behind Ifeoma Nwoye, Nigeria and ahead of Jessica MacDonald, Canada.

In 2011 she won the Commonwealth Championship in Melbourne in front of her compatriot Priyanka Singh and Donna Robertson. At the 2011 World Championships in Istanbul, she competed in the weight class up to 48 kg for the first time because the weight class up to 51 kg, in which she had previously competed, was not Olympic in 2012. She didn’t get along well in Istanbul in this weight class, which she only achieved through enormous training, and lost her first fight against Zhao Shasha from China. She was eliminated and only reached 23rd place. In April 2012, she tried to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in the weight class up to 48 kg in Taiyuan / China. But she only reached 5th place, which was not enough for a start in London.

Babita Kumari returned to the weight class up to 51 kg and celebrated the greatest success of her wrestling career in this class at the 2012 World Championships in Stathcona County / Canada. She took 3rd place behind Jessica MacDonald from Canada and Sun Yanan from China, together with Alyssa Lampe from the United States, and thus won a bronze medal at the World Championships.

In 2013 she won a bronze medal at the Asian Championships in New Delhi in the weight class up to 55 kg behind Yang Senlian , China and Kanako Murata , Japan.
