Helen Louise Maroulis (born September 19, 1991 ) is an American wrestler . In 2015 she became world champion in the weight class up to 55 kg and in 2017 in the weight class up to 58 kg. In 2016 she won the gold medal in the weight category up to 53 kg at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .
Career
Helen Maroulis attended high school in Marquette, Michigan , where she began wrestling in 1999. She now resides in Rockville , Maryland and is a member of the New York Athletic Club. After her high school time, she first studied at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby / Canada and then at Missouri Baptist University. She was or is trained by Mike Jones, Bryan Jackson and Wladislaus Isboinikow. The 1.60 meter tall athlete starts as an adult in the weight class up to 55 kg body weight.
She had her first notable success in 2006, when she took 3rd place in the US Junior Championship in the age group "Cadets" (up to the age of 16) in the weight class up to 52 kg. In 2007 she was American champion in the same age group and in the same weight class. In 2008 she became US Junior Champion (age group up to 20 years of age) and took second place at the US Women's Championships in the weight category up to 51 kg, behind Jessica Medina and ahead of Katherinae Fulp-Allen. In the same year she made her first starts at international championships. At the Junior World Championships in Istanbul she took third place in the weight class up to 51 kg with four wins and one defeat against the Japanese Yu Horiuchi and thus won a bronze medal at the World Championships . In September 2008, Helen Maroulis won the World Cup elimination (Trials) against such experienced wrestlers as Stephanie Murata and Whitney Conder and represented the United States at the World Cup in Tokyo . There she won over Roksana Zasina from Poland , but then lost to the multiple world champion Hitomi Sakamoto and the Canadian Jessica MacDonald and came in 8th place.
In 2009, Helen Maroulis was both the American champion in the women and in the juniors, each in the weight class up to 55 kg. While she lost her first fight against Marwa Amri from Tunisia at the Junior World Championships this year in Ankara and therefore only came in 17th, she won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships in Maracaibo .
In 2010 she was beaten by Tatjana Padilla at the US championship and at the World Championship trials . But she started at the Junior World Championships in Budapest and finished there with four wins in a renewed defeat against Yu Horiuchi in 3rd place, which she again won a bronze medal.
In April 2011, Helen Maroulis was American champion in the weight class up to 55 kg in front of Kelsey Campbell and Schuyler Brown. She also won the title again in the US Junior Championship and also prevailed in the World Championship trials ahead of Ashley Hudson and Kelsey Campbell. In November 2011, the US Wrestling Association held another USA championship for the four Olympic weight classes (up to 48 kg, up to 55 kg, up to 63 kg and up to 72). Helen Maroulis also won there ahead of Leigh Jaynes and Kelsey Campbell. This championship is already part of the qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games in London .
In 2011 she competed in three international championships. First she won a silver medal at the European Junior Championships in Bucharest . She was only defeated there in the final against the Japanese Kanako Murata, who she fought in a great fight, with 1: 2 rounds and 5: 5 points. At the World Championships in Istanbul she won over Aiym Abduldina from Kazakhstan and Volja Trandewa Tihomirowa from Bulgaria , then lost to multiple world and Olympic champion Saori Yoshida on points, won over Emriye Musta from Turkey and Alma Jane Valencia Escoto from Mexico before she competed lost for a world championship bronze medal against Ida-Theres Nerell from Sweden . At the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, she managed to defeat Canadian favorite Tonya Verbeek in the final and thus carry the championship title.
In February 2012, she won the Pan American Championships in Colorado Springs . Here she defeated Marcia Yuleisi Andrades Mendoza from Mexico in the final battle. Helen Maroulis did not make the jump to the Olympic Games in London because she lost to Kelsey Campbell in the US Olympic elimination. But it was used in September 2012 at the World Championships in Strathcona County, Canada, and was there in the weight class up to 55 kg after victories over Nadezhda Michailowa, Belarus, Maria Prevolaraki , Greece and Brittanee Laverdure , Canada and a defeat in the final against Saori Yoshida runner-up World champion.
At the 2013 World Championships in Budapest, she did not make it into the medal ranks. She won there first over Han Kum-ok, North Korea and Pham Thi Hue, Vietnam, but then lost to Soria Mattsson and Maya Christowa from Bulgaria, which brought her to 7th place.
In 2014, however, she won a medal again at the World Cup in Tashkent. She defeated Elverina Jimenez Zepeda from Nicaragua and Battsetseg Altantsetseg from Mongolia in the weight class up to 55 kg. In the semifinals she lost to Chiho Hamada from Japan and then secured a bronze medal in the consolation round with a victory over Katarzyna Krawczyk from Poland.
At the 2015 World Cup in Las Vegas, Helen Maroulis finally won the title. There she defeated Brend Isabella Fernandes Salazar from Mexico, Evelina Nikolowa from Bulgaria, Pang Qianyu from China and in the final Irina Ologonowa from Russia, who she clearly dominated in a quick 11-0 victory.
At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Helen Maroulis started in the weight class up to 53 kg. There she won the Olympic gold medal with five victories in a superior style. On the way to this success she defeated Julija Blahinja from Ukraine (12: 1) and Zhong Xuechun, China (10: 0) both prematurely. In the third round she beat the stubbornly defending North Korean Jong Myong Suk on points (7: 4). In the semifinals, Helen Maroulis won over the strong Swede Sofia Mattsson and in the final she defeated the exceptional wrestler and three-time Olympic champion Saori Yoshida from Japan with 4: 1 points and caused a big surprise. But her victory was well deserved.
In 2017 Helen Maroulis also became world champion in the weight class up to 58 kg in Paris in a superior style. You defeated it five opponents in advance by techn. Case and scored 52-0 techn. Points. Your final opponent was Marwa Amri from Tunisia.
In January 2018, Helen Maroulis met Marwa Amri again in a revenge match as part of the Indian Professional Wrestling League. She suffered a severe head injury in that fight from which she recovered slowly. For this reason, she was only able to qualify for the World Cup in Budapest on October 6, 2018 in a specially scheduled qualification with two superior early wins (10: 0 and 12: 0) over Alex Hendrick. In Budapest she met Aljona Kolesnik from Azerbaijan in the first round, against whom she had to accept a surprising defeat. Since Aljona Kolesnik did not reach the final, Helen Maroulis was eliminated and only came in 21st place.
