Stephanie Murata
Stephanie Murata (born October 16, 1970 ) is a former American wrestler . In 2001 she became vice world champion in the weight class up to 51 kg body weight.
Career
Stephanie Murata is of Japanese descent. She didn't start wrestling until she was 23, having previously played several other sports. She was then based in Lansing, Michigan . After high school, she trained as a physiotherapist. In this area, she continues to work after the end of her active time with the US wrestling association. As a wrestler, she was a member of the Sunkist Kids Phoenix (Arizona) wrestling club for many years . The coaches she worked with the longest were Terry Steiner and Vladimir Isboinikov. The 1.60 meter tall athlete started in various weight classes, mostly in the weight classes up to 51 kg or up to 55 kg, but also in the weight class up to 48 kg in view of a possible participation in the Olympic Games.
In 1996 she started in Sofia for the first time at a world championship for women. In the then existing weight class up to 53 kg she came in 7th place. In the following years she took part in seven world championships up to 2007. She achieved the best result in 2001. She was runner-up that year in Sofia in the weight class up to 51 kg. On the way to this success she defeated Kyle Bremner, Australia, Sofia Pompouridou from Greece and Lyndsey Belisle from Canada. In the final she was defeated by Hitomi Obara Sakamoto, the multiple world and Olympic champion. In 1998 and 1999 she took the thankless 4th place at the World Championships in Poznań and Boden / Sweden. At her last start at a world championship, in Baku in 2007, she came in 5th place in the weight class up to 48 kg, in which she had trained with great sacrifices. She was subject to u. a. against Chiharu Ichō from Japan just on points (0: 2 rounds, 0: 2 points). Since this world champion, she was able to continue in the consolation round, in which she u. a. Maria Stadnik , Azerbaijan, defeated, then narrowly defeated the Chinese Li Xiaomei in the battle for a bronze medal (1: 2 rounds, 1: 3 points).
Stephanie Murate tried twice to qualify for participation in the Olympic Games. In 2004 she failed in the US qualification (Trials), where she only finished 4th in the weight class up to 55 kg. In 2008 she tried to qualify in the United States in the weight class up to 48 kg for the Olympic participation in Beijing. This year she took second place behind Patricia Miranda at the US championship in this weight class , but was injured in the actual trials and therefore could not start. The dream of participating in the Olympics was gone.
Stephanie Murata won the title of a Pan-American Championship in 1997, 2001 and 2002. In 2007, she finished 3rd in the Pan-American Games.
American champion (the results are only known from the year 2000) she was in 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2007.
After finishing her wrestling career in 2008, she started at the NoGi Grappling World Championships in Fort Lauderdale in 2009, where she finished 2nd in the weight class up to 55 kg behind Laurence Fouillet from France.
