Sofia Magdalena Mattsson (born November 11, 1989 in Gällivare ) is a Swedish wrestler . In 2009 she became world champion in the weight class up to 51 kg and several times European champion in the weight class up to 55 kg body weight. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 53 kg body weight
Career
Sofia Mattsson is one of three wrestling sisters, the other two being Johanna Mattsson and Lisa Mattsson . All three belong to the BK (Brottning Klub) Gällivare . Sofia Mattsson began wrestling in 1996 and has been trained by Fariz Besarati, Hakan Johansson, Kalle Taivalsaari and Anders Magnusson since then. As an adult she started in the weight class up to 48 kg or up to 51 kg body weight. The 1.62 meter tall athlete is currently not doing any other job. She was extremely successful even as a junior. So she was six times Swedish junior champion in the age group Cadets and twice in the age group Juniors. In the adult category, she won the Swedish championship title in 2006 (up to 48 kg body weight), 2007, 2008, 2009 (up to 51 kg body weight each) and 2010 (up to 55 kg body weight).
Her international career began in 2004 with a victory at the Nordic Junior Championships (Cadets), which it a victory at the Junior European Championships in 2004 in Albena in the weight category to 43 kg body weight before Mariya Stadnik , Ukraine and Lola Urunowa from Russia follow let. Sofia Mattsson remained unbeaten at international junior championships until 2008 and became junior world champion in Guatemala City in 2006 and in Beijing in 2008 (weight class up to 48 kg) and also junior European champion in the same weight class in Istanbul in 2006 and in Sofia in 2007 .
In 2007 she started for the first time in an international championship for adults and won 3rd place in the weight class up to 48 kg at the European championship in Sofia. At the World Championships this year in Baku , she surprisingly lost after three wins against the multiple Pan-American champion Mayelis Carpia Castillo from Venezuela and only came in 8th place.
The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing were also disappointing for her , as she lost there in the weight class. up to 48 kg in her first fight against the American Clarissa Chun . Since this did not reach the final battle, she was eliminated early and only reached 12th place.
She also disappointed at the 2009 European Championships in Vilnius , where she started in the weight class up to 51 kg for the first time, because after defeating Dilek Atakol from Turkey , she lost to Julija Blahynja from Ukraine and ended up in 10th place . Then she was unrecognizable at the 2009 World Cup in Herning / Denmark . With victories over Hong Di, China , Jessica Medina , USA , Alexandra Engelhardt , Germany , Yuri Kai , Japan and Han Kum-ok , North Korea , she became the adult world champion for the first time. The superiority with which she won this title was particularly impressive. In the five fights that she played, she achieved a points ratio of 34: 0, which is certainly unique on the international wrestling mat.
In a similarly superior manner, she then won her first European women's title in Baku in 2010 . She defeated Alexandra Engelhardt, Hafize Sahin, Turkey, Natalia Budu , Moldova and Estera Dobre from Romania . The ratio of points in these four fights was this time 24: 1 in their favor. At the 2010 World Cup in Moscow she lost her first fight against Yu Horiuchi from Japan, but was then able to win a bronze medal with victories over Angela Dorogan, Azerbaijan and Roksana Zasina , Poland .
At the European Championships 2011 in Dortmund she was not at the start. But at this year's World Cup in Istanbul. There she defeated Aydin Metin, Turkey, Dordschiin Narmandach , Mongolia and Takako Saito, Japan and only lost to the Ukrainian Hanna Wassylenko in the final with 1: 2 rounds and 3: 4 points. In the 2012 Olympic year, Sofia Mattsson started at the European Championships in Belgrade. There she beat Elena Turcan, Moldova, Maria Gurowa , Russia and Maria Prevolaraki , Greece, but had to accept a narrow point defeat in the final against Natalja Sinischin from Ukraine. The Olympic Games in London then brought a disappointment for Sofia Mattsson, because after victories over Sündewiin Bjambatseren from Mongolia and Marwa Amri from Tunisia, she lost in her third fight against Valerija Scholobowa from Russia with 0: 2 rounds, although she had a points ratio of 5: 4 in their favor. Since this did not reach the final, she was eliminated and took 7th place.
In 2013 Sofia Mattsson achieved another great victory in Tbilisi. There she became European champion with victories over Ana Maria Paval, Mariana Erasnu, Moldova, Emese Barka from Hungary and Maria Prevoloraki. She was also successful at the 2013 World Cup in Budapest. There she defeated Lilija Shakirova, Uzbekistan, Maya Christowa, Bulgaria, Helen Maroulis and Emese Barka and only lost in the final against the Olympic and multiple world champion Saori Yoshida.
In 2014 she became European champion again in Vantaa / Finland. In the weight class up to 55 kg she defeated Bediha Gün, Turkey, Irina Ologonowa , Russia and Anna Zwirydowska , Poland. At the World Championships this year in Tashkent Sofia Mattsson was again in the weight class up to 53 kg after victories over Luisa Valverde, Ecuador, Jong Myong-suk, North Korea, Whitney Conder, United States and Natalia Budu, Moldova and a defeat in the final against Saori Yoshida Vice world champion.
At the 1st European Games in Baku in 2015, Sofia Mattsson started in the weight class up to 55 kg and won the title there with victories over Laura Mertens, Germany, Tatjana Kit, Ukraine, Natalja Sinischin, Azerbaijan and Katarzyna Krawczyk, Poland. At the World Championships in Las Vegas, she trained again in the weight class up to 53 kg. In Las Vegas she defeated Nadezhda Shushko from Belarus, Betzabeth Angelica Arguello Villegas from Venezuela, Odunaye Folasade Adekuoroye, Nigeria and Zhong Xuechun from China. In the final, however, she lost again to Saori Yoshida and became vice world champion for the fifth time in her career.
In March 2016, Sofia Mattsson was again European champion in the weight class up to 53 kg. In the final she won over Irina Kurotschkina from Belarus. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Sofia Mattsson finally won a medal on the third attempt. In the weight class up to 53 kg she won a bronze medal.
In 2017 she took a break from the international championships. In 2018 she started at the World Championships in Budapest, where she only reached 7th place after winning two fights and defeats against Mayu Mukaida , Japan and Jong Myong-suk , North Korea.
