Sofia Mattsson began wrestling in 1996 and has been trained by Fariz Besarati, Hakan Johansson, Kalle Taivalsaari and Anders Magnusson since then. As an adult she started in the weight class up to 48 kg or up to 51 kg body weight. The 1.62 meter tall athlete is currently not doing any other job. She was extremely successful even as a junior. So she was six times Swedish junior champion in the age group Cadets and twice in the age group Juniors. In the adult category, she won the Swedish championship title in 2006 (up to 48 kg body weight), 2007, 2008, 2009 (up to 51 kg body weight each) and 2010 (up to 55 kg body weight).

Her international career began in 2004 with a victory at the Nordic Junior Championships (Cadets), which it a victory at the Junior European Championships in 2004 in Albena in the weight category to 43 kg body weight before Mariya Stadnik , Ukraine and Lola Urunowa from Russia follow let. Sofia Mattsson remained unbeaten at international junior championships until 2008 and became junior world champion in Guatemala City in 2006 and in Beijing in 2008 (weight class up to 48 kg) and also junior European champion in the same weight class in Istanbul in 2006 and in Sofia in 2007 .

At the World Championships this year in Baku , she surprisingly lost after three wins against the multiple Pan-American champion Mayelis Carpia Castillo from Venezuela and only came in 8th place.

The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing were also disappointing for her , as she lost there in the weight class. up to 48 kg in her first fight against the American Clarissa Chun . Since this did not reach the final battle, she was eliminated early and only reached 12th place.

There she beat Elena Turcan, Moldova, Maria Gurowa , Russia and Maria Prevolaraki , Greece, but had to accept a narrow point defeat in the final against Natalja Sinischin from Ukraine.
