They were trained there by Kalle Taivalsaari and Hakan Johansson. Fariborz Besarati later joined the national team as coach. Johanna Mattsson was Swedish champion several times in the junior division and won her first Swedish championship title among adults in the weight class up to 55 kg in 2005 when she was seventeen. After attending school and graduating from high school, she is currently fully dedicated to wrestling. She also works as an assistant trainer in a wrestling school in Helsingborg.

Her international career began at the 2004 Junior European Championships (Cadets) in Albena , where she won the title in the weight class up to 52 kg body weight. In 2005 she was Junior World Champion (Juniors) in Vilnius in the weight class up to 56 kg body weight, ahead of Danyelle Hedin from the United States and Alena Malischko from the Ukraine . In the same year she also won the Junior European Championship (Cadets) in Tirana in the weight class up to 56 kg body weight.

In 2006 she started at the European Championships in Moscow in the weight class up to 55 kg body weight, where she finished third behind Natalja Golz from Russia and Ludmila Cristea from Moldova . At the subsequent Junior World Championship (Juniors) in Guatemala City , she was unable to defend her title from the previous year in the same weight class, but came in third behind Sandra Roa from Colombia and Alena Filipawa from Belarus and thus won a bronze medal.

At the European Championships 2007 in Sofia , Johanna Mattsson lost after winning a fight against Ludmila Cristea and only came 8th. At this year's World Championships in Beijing , however, she again won the bronze medal in the weight class up to 55 kg body weight. She did not achieve a medal at the 2008 European Championships in Tampere , where Natalja Golz won again. Johanna Matsson took 5th place. For a starting place at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 in the weight class up to 55 kg body weight, she could not qualify because she drew the short straw in the Swedish Olympic qualification in this weight class against Ida-Theres Nerell . She became the new European weight class champion in Vilnius with victories over Kitti Grodo, Hungary , Sabrina Esposito, Italy , Julia Rekwawa , Russia and Irina Chariw , Ukraine. up to 59 kg body weight. After that she was very unlucky because she suffered a cruciate ligament rupture and could not compete at the 2009 World Cup and 2010 European Championship , which was a shame because she was in top form at that time, which was also her victory, immediately before her injury. at the Golden Gala Grand Prix in Baku in front of Marianna Sastin and Elwira Mursalowa , Azerbaijan . Recovered, she started at the 2010 World Cup in Moscow , where she won a bronze medal after victories over Natalja Simchin, Ukraine, Alka Toman, India, a defeat against Zhang Lan , China and victories over Alena Filipawa and Kelsey Campbell , USA.

After a long training stay in South Africa at the beginning of 2011 , she did not compete at the 2011 European Championships in Dortmund or the World Championships . In the Olympic year 2012 she took part in the European championship in the weight class up to 63 kg in Belgrade in March. She lost her first fight there against Julia Tkach , Ukraine, but was able to continue in the consolation round, as Julia Tkach reached the final. In the consolation round she first defeated ex-world champion Audrey Prieto from France, but then lost in the battle for a bronze medal against Elif Jale Yesilirmak from Turkey and came in 5th place.

Shortly after this championship, Johanna Mattsson was seriously injured. She suffered a torn cruciate ligament and a severe meniscus injury. She therefore had to undergo a total of four operations and was unable to train or take part in competitions for almost two years. She made her first start after this serious injury in February 2014. She took 3rd place at the Klippan Ladies Open in the weight class up to 60 kg. So she went optimistically to the European Championship in Vantaa / Finland in April 2014.
