Albena [ ɐɫˈbɛnɐ ] ( Bulgarian Албена ) is a hotel town on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast , about 30 kilometers north of Varna in Dobrich Oblast ( Bulgarian Област Добрич ).

The hotel town was named after a girl figure by the Bulgarian writer Jordan Jowkow and is considered to be the most expensive tourism project from the socialist era in Bulgaria. The settlement, designed like a large triangle of streets, fits into the hilly region of the densely wooded Bălțata Mountains . In August 1969, nine hotels and four restaurants were opened. Today there are 43 hotels with 14,900 beds as well as numerous restaurants and shops in the town .

The beach is several kilometers long and consists of very fine sand . The tourism center is dominated by the fifth tallest building in Bulgaria, the Hotel Dobruja . The seaside resort boasts an excellent, albeit heavily tourist infrastructure and a wide range of leisure and sports activities. Due to the increasing number of foreign visitors, both have become just as necessary as the strict ecological principles for checking air and water values, which were introduced here to maintain the quality of the holiday.

The season lasts from May to the end of October; the high season from July to mid-August. In the winter months, Albena is deserted.

The city has given its name to the Albena Peninsula on the Brabant Island in Antarctica since 2009 .

Attractions

Albena has a small pier , which is located on the northern outskirts near the historic ship Arabella, which is used as a restaurant . It is a three-master that sailed the sea line from Burgas to Varna and was pulled ashore in 1971. During the previous restoration, parts of the also decommissioned ship "Prinz Kirill" were used. The Baltata nature reserve is located on the southern outskirts .
