The Baltata nature reserve ( Bulgarian Резерват Балтата ) is a 204.7 hectare nature reserve in northeastern Bulgaria . It is located south of Albena in the hilly region of the wooded Bălțata Mountains at the mouth of the Batowska River in the Black Sea . The nature reserve belongs to the municipality of Kranewo .

flora

The sandbanks washed up by the Black Sea at irregular intervals in strong easterly winds are responsible for the extremely lush vegetation of the Baltata nature reserve with numerous tall trees (especially the oaks and elms typical of north-eastern Europe ) with lianas and ivy . These sandbanks blocked the Baltowa again and again from draining to the sea and led to the backwater of the water. This created several arms of the river, some of which ended blindly and led to the creation of a veritable small delta at the mouth of the river , which became a paradise for plants and animals. Around 263 plant species have been identified in the Baltata nature reserve, including hyacinths and irises . Of these, 16 species are on the Bulgarian Red List . One of them is the summer knot flower .

In the bathing season after strong easterly storms, excavators are used to artificially create the drainage of the river in order to prevent the beach from being washed away in front of the Hotel Gergana . To the south of this hotel there is also a wooden pedestrian bridge over the Batowskas estuary. A few years ago a wooden observation tower was built not far from this bridge, from the top platform of which there was a view of the nature reserve. Due to its wooden construction, the tower is exposed to adverse weather conditions and can only be accessed to a limited extent or not.

fauna

The Greek tortoise deserves special mention in terms of animal species . 183 bird species have been identified, including the great egret , the black and white stork , the mallard , the lesser spotted eagle and various hoopoes , woodpeckers and pheasants . There are 16 species of fish in the reserve, four of which are threatened with extinction and are therefore protected.
