Kranewo ( Bulgarian Кранево ) is a place belonging to the Balchik municipality on the Black Sea in Dobrich Oblast ( Bulgarian Област Добрич ) in the northeast of Bulgaria , about 25 km northeast of the city of Varna and 8 km from Slatni pjasazi ( Golden Sands). To the north of the village is the Albena seaside resort .

Geographical location

The place is located directly on the Black Sea in the hilly region of the densely wooded Bălirata Mountains . The sea beach is up to 100 m wide in some places and has gold-shimmering, fine-grain sand, from which the name of the neighboring town of Gold Sands to the south goes back, among other things. This sand is due to ground mussels. The Golden Sands Nature Park is located southwest of Kranewo .

The area of ​​the municipality is 16.5 km².

The community extends at an altitude of 0 to 142 m.

In 2004 there were 967 residents in Kranewo and 992 in 2016.

Kranewo does not have a beach promenade , but several streets leading to the sea, on which, in addition to residential and weekend houses, hotels , supermarkets and restaurants are lined up. With the exception of a newly built, small Orthodox chapel, there are no non-tourist buildings in Kranewo.

The main season in Kranewo is from June to August and the bathing season from mid-May to mid-October. In the meantime, a luxury hotel and apartment complex with an Olympic pool and Black Sea Ice Arena has emerged or is under construction.

history

During the period of socialism, Kranewo was best known internationally for its large pioneer camp, which was set up here in the 1950s in the summer months, in which numerous children and young people from various European countries took a rest. Even today, successor organizations still use parts of the former pioneer camp for recreational and sporting purposes.

Baltata Nature Reserve

The Baltata nature reserve is located north of Kranewo . It is a 204.7 hectare nature reserve in the hilly region of the densely wooded Bălțata Mountains at the mouth of the Batowska River in the Black Sea.
