Monika Ewa Michalik
Monika Ewa Michalik (born May 2, 1980 in Międzyrzecz ) is a Polish wrestler . She has been European champion three times and has won ten medals at world and European championships so far.
Career
Michalik started wrestling in 1995 at the age of 15. She belongs to the Orleta Trzciel sports club . Since 2004 she has been trained by Mieczysław Kurys. She studied sports and has been a member of the military for several years. In the early years of her career, the 1.67 meter tall athlete started in the weight class up to 63 kg and even trained in the weight class up to 55 kg for some championships. But since this meant too much loss of substance, she has only been wrestling in the weight class up to 63 kg since 1963. At times it started under the name Rogien or Michalik-Rogien. She is also a multiple Polish champion and a tireless high starter. In addition, she is the horror of all German wrestlers, against whom she has hardly lost a fight.
Her international career began in 1999. She finished 11th in the European Junior Championships in Budapest in the weight class up to 63 kg. A year later she won a silver medal at the Junior European Championships in Sofia in the same weight class and a bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Nantes . In 2002 she started for the first time with the women at an international championship and became vice European champion in Seinäjoki / Finland in the weight class up to 59 kg. She defeated u. a. Christina Oertli from Germany and only lost in the final against Sara Eriksson from Sweden . At the world championship of the same year in Chalkida / Greece , where she had trained in the weight class up to 55 kg, she lost after three wins against Tina George from the United States and came in 7th place.
At the 2003 European Championships in Riga , she then won her first European title in the weight class up to 59 kg. In the final, she defeated Stefanie Stüber from Germany. Things did not go as well for her at the 2003 World Cup in New York , because there she won over the strong wrestlers Ida-Theres Nerell from Sweden and Sofia Poumpouridou from Greece, but then lost to Saori Yoshida from Japan and finished in 9th place. In 2004 she did not manage to qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens . In the only qualifying tournament that she played, she only finished 10th in the weight class up to 55 kg in Madrid.
For this she won her second European title at the European Championships in Varna in 2005 , this time in the weight class up to 63 kg. On the way to this success she defeated Maria Müller from Germany, Aljona Kartaschowa from Russia , the former world champion Nikola Hartmann-Dünser from Austria and Olga Chilko from Ukraine . As in previous years, she played no role at the World Cup this year in Budapest , because she lost there after winning a fight in revenge against Olga Chilko. Since this did not reach the final, she was eliminated and only reached the 13th place.
In 2006 Monika Ewa Michalik became Vice European Champion in Moscow . She lost it in the final battle against Aljona Kartaschowa. At the world championships in Guangzhou she finally managed to win a medal. There she beat the strong American Sara McMann in her second fight , but then lost to Kaori Icho from Japan. With a victory over Yoselin Rojas Urbira from Venezuela , she won a bronze medal at the World Championships. In 2007 it was almost as successful. She won a bronze medal in the weight class up to 63 kg at the European championships in Sofia and at the world championships in Baku . In Sofia she lost to Aljona Kartaschowa and won this medal with a victory over Lise Legrand from France and in Baku she lost to Jelena Schalygina from Kazakhstan and defeated Helena Allandi from Sweden and Julija Ostaptschuk from Ukraine in the consolation round .
In 2008 she won another medal at the European Championships in Tampere , the bronze one. She lost again to Aljona Kartaschowa and won the battle for this bronze medal over Oxana Schalikowa from Ukraine. The Olympic Games in Beijing turned out to be a disappointment for them . First she won over her old competitor Olga Chilko with 2: 1 rounds with 4: 4 points and then lost against Lise Legrand with 1: 2 rounds with 4: 4 points. Since Golliot-Legrand then did not reach the final, Monika Ewa Michalik was eliminated and only came in 8th place.
Just like four years ago, she became European champion again the year after the Olympic Games in 2009 in Vilnius . There she defeated Elina Wasewa from Bulgaria , Stefanie Stüber from Germany, Audrey Prieto from France and Aljona Kartaschowa, to whom she had lost in the last three years. At the 2009 World Championships in Herning / Denmark she missed a medal after losing to Lyubov Michailowna Wolossowa from Russia because she lost in the battle for one of the bronze medals against Justine Bouchard from Canada.
At the following World and European Championships, Monika Ewa Michalik was no longer very successful, with one exception. Most of the time she lost her first fight and ended up in a very low position because the wrestlers against whom she lost never reached the final. At the 2010 World Championships in Moscow, she only finished 26th, and only 16th at the European Championships in Dortmund . At the 2011 World Cup in Istanbul , she won two fights, but then lost to Jing Ruixue from the People's Republic of China and ended up in 11th place. The positive exception was the European Championship 2012 in Belgrade , where it won a bronze medal again behind Julija Ostaptschuk and Natalja Smirnowa from Russia. With a win at the last qualifying tournament in Helsinki , she managed to qualify for the Olympic Games in London in May 2012 . In London she came to a win over Blessing Oborududu, Nigeria a loss to Jing Ruixue, China, a win over Choo Zb-Gyong, North Korea and a loss to Lyubov Michailowna Wolossowa. With 5th place she just missed the medal ranks. After the Olympic Games in London, she also took part in the World Championships in Strathcoona County, Canada. There she lost to Taybe Yusein from Bulgaria and Justine Bouchard from Canada and only came in 10th place.
Monika Ewa Michalik continued her career in 2013 and became Vice European Champion in March of this year in Tbilisi with victories over Nadine Weinauge, Germany, Elina Wasewa, Bulgaria and Hanna Wassylenko and a defeat against Anastasija Grigorjeva.
