Tina George
Tina George (born November 5, 1978 in Cleveland, Ohio ) is a former American wrestler . In 2002 and 2003 she became vice world champion in the weight class up to 55 kg.
Career
Tina George began wrestling in 1996 at Cleveland High School, which she attended at the time. Her first trainer was Jason Loukides. She made rapid progress and was first US Junior Champion in 1997 and US Women's Champion for the first time in 1998. During her entire career, she wrestled with a height of 1.52 meters in the weight class up to 56 or 55 kg body weight. After high school, she began studying chemistry and biology at the University of Minnesota at Morris. Because she wanted to get ahead in sports, she soon moved to the University of Colorado and became a member of the Sunkist Kids wrestling club . She trained now in the performance center of the US Wrestling Association in Colorado Springs . In those years, she received a US $ 900 scholarship. This amount was not enough to live in expensive Colorado Springs, which forced her to work part-time in addition to studying and training. However, this did not allow for the intensive training that would have been necessary. This was shown by the fact that the sporting successes, especially in the international championships, did not materialize. She therefore decided to join the US Army in 2001. She was immediately accepted into the special program for competitive athletes in the Army and was stationed in Fort Jackson and Fort Carson . Her army trainer was mostly Shon Lewis. The first successes of this change were already evident in 2002, because Tina George was runner-up in the world championship this year.
Tina George has been the US champion seven times. Her international career began in 1998. She finished 12th at the World Championships in Poznań in the weight class up to 56 kg after losing to Gudrun Annette Høie , Norway and Mariko Shimizu from Japan . A year later she came in 6th place at the World Championships in Hildursborg / Sweden . There she defeated Tanja Sauter from Germany and lost to Cao Haying from China and Mariko Shimizu.
At the World Cup in Sofia in 2000 , she suffered two defeats again and only reached 11th place. 2001 Tina George failed in the US World Championship elimination (World Championship Trials) to Erin Tomeo . In 2002 she was again USA champion before Stephanie Murata and prevailed against the same wrestler in the World Championship trials. At this year's World Cup in Chalkida / Greece she was very successful and defeated Vanessa Boubryemm , France , Nadine Tokar, Switzerland , Josiane Patricia Soloniaina, Madagascar , Monika Ewa Michalik from Poland and Kostantina Katerina Tsibanakou from Greece and was in the final against Saori Yoshida from Japan . Saori Yoshida started an unprecedented career this year. She defeated Tina George just on points and became world champion and Tina George became vice world champion.
2003 Tina George had to admit defeat at the Pan American Championship in Guatemala City in the final of the Canadian Tonya Verbeek . At the Pan American Games 2003 in Santo Domingo , a few months later, she managed to get her revenge, because she defeated the same wrestler in the final battle. At the 2003 World Cup in New York , she fought her way back into the final with victories over Julieta Kliford Okot, Bulgaria , Ludmila Cristea , Republic of Moldova , Elvira Mursalowa, Kyrgyzstan , Mabel Fonseca Ramirez, Puerto Rico and Sun Dongmei , China. In this she lost again to Saori Yoshida.
Tina George went into the Olympic year 2004 with high hopes. She was again USA champion, but lost in the OS Trials against Tela O'Donnell and was therefore not nominated for the US Olympic team. Despite this disappointment, she continued her career, but was unable to match the successes of 2002 and 2003 at the 2005 World Cup in Budapest and the 2006 World Cup in Guangzhou . In 2005 it took 12th place and in 2006 only 20th place.
Tina George continued her career until 2008, but could no longer qualify for international championships.
