Jennifer Ryz
Jennifer Ryz (born May 11, 1973 in Winnipeg ) is a former Canadian wrestler . In 1996 she was vice world champion in the weight class up to 53 kg.
Career
Jennifer Ryz did athletics and basketball during her high school and college years . From 1993 she started wrestling. At that time, women's wrestling was still in its infancy, so it's not surprising that she was already 20 years old when she started wrestling. There was simply no way to do this before. She became a member of Canada's most prestigious wrestling club, the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club . She was trained by Dave MacKay , Dennis Paglinawan, Mike Jones and Justin Abdou. At a height of 1.53 meters, she wrestled in the weight classes up to 53 kg, 55 kg and 56 kg body weight. She was not a professional wrestler, but practiced the profession of social worker even during her wrestling career.
Her first assignment at an international championship led her to the world championship in Sofia . She started there in the weight class up to 53 kg body weight and won the World Cup silver medal there behind the French Anna Gomis and ahead of the Japanese Riyoko Sakae . In the following years she always had to fight for supremacy in her weight class in Canada with Tonya Verbeek and Erica Sharp . Once she prevailed, the other time one of the other two wrestlers. That was also the reason why there are breaks when they appear at international championships.
In 1998 she was Pan-American Champion in Winnipeg in the weight class up to 53 kg in front of Olga Marina Lugo Guarchia from Venezuela . At the 1998 World Cup in Poznan , she lost to Natalja Iwaschko from Russia , then won over Kristina Lanskich from Uzbekistan and Minerva Montero Perez from Spain , but another defeat against Malgorzata Bassa-Roguska from Poland threw her out of the competition. In the end, she finished in 8th place. The next start at a world championship she completed in 2000 again in Sofia. After winning three fights, she met the Japanese Seiko Yamamoto in the semifinals in the weight class up to 56 kg KG, to whom she lost on points. In the fight for a world championship bronze medal , she then defeated Salma Ferchichi from Tunisia .
In 2001 she only competed at the World Cup in Levallois / France , where she took 3rd place in the weight class up to 56 kg, behind Seiko Yamamoto and the Chinese Dongmei Sun. In 2002 she won the World Championships in Chalkida / Greece over Valentina Welewa from Bulgaria and Eva Sacchi from Italy, but then met perhaps the best female wrestler in the world, Saori Yoshida from Japan, to whom she was defeated. It took 5th place.
In 2003, Jennifer Ryz defeated Tina George from the United States and Natalja Iwaschko from Russia at the so-called Titan Games in New York . The same year she also launched the Grand Prix of Germany in Dormagen , they had there but in the weight category to 55 kg with the 8th place satisfied. But a little later she won the Austrian Lady Open in Götzis in front of her old rival Tonya Verbeek, Sabrina Lotz from Germany and Ida-Theres Nerell , who was then still called Karlsson, from Sweden . In 2003 she was back at the World Championships in New York . She won there in the weight class up to 55 kg against Chuang Shu-Fang from Taiwan and Diletta Giampiccolo from Italy, but then lost again against Saori Yoshida and came in 6th place.
In February 2004 Jennifer Ryz fought in Edmonton against Tonya Verbeek in three fights for the Olympic ticket to Athens . She won only one of three fights and had to give Tonya Verbeek the ticket to these Olympic Games. She was so disappointed with it that she quit her career soon after.
