Marija Gurowa started wrestling in her hometown in 2000. She is a member of a sports club in Yegoryevsk and is trained there by Oleg Jurewitsch Tschernow. She is currently a psychology student and fights in the weight class up to 55 kg.

In 2006 she achieved two great successes in the junior division. This year she was twice Junior European Champion, first in Szombathely in the age group "Juniors" (up to the age of 18) and then in Istanbul in the age group "Cadets" (up to the age of 16). In 2007 and 2008 she did not compete in any other international championships. In 2009, however, she was again Junior European Champion in the weight class up to 55 kg in Tbilisi, ahead of Anastasija Grigorjeva , Latvia, and Julija Blahinja , Ukraine. At the Junior World Championship in Ankara in 2009, she was eliminated after two wins by a defeat against Marwa Amri from Tunisia and only came in 8th place.

2010 Marija Gurowa became Russian champion in the seniors in the weight class up to 55 kg. It was then used at the World Championships in Moscow, where it won victories over Valentina Minguzzi, Italy, Sündewiin Bjambatseren , Mongolia, and Marwa Amri, but then lost to Saori Yoshida from Japan and in the fight for a bronze medal against Tatjana Padilla from the United States, taking 5th place.

In 2011 she was unable to defend her Russian championship title, but competed at the European Championship in Dortmund. There she won over Hafize Sahin, Turkey, and Emese Szabo, Hungary, then lost to Ida-Theres Nerell from Sweden and then won an EM bronze medal by beating Ana Maria Pavăl from Romania . At the world championship in Istanbul she lost her first fight against Tonya Verbeek from Canada. But since this reached the final battle, she was able to continue in the consolation round and defeated Batbaataryn Nomin-Erdene , Mongolia, and Julia Ratkewitsch from Azerbaijan. In the fight for a bronze medal in the World Cup, however, she lost to Tetjana Lasarewa from Ukraine and was therefore fifth, as in 2010.

In 2012 Marija Gurowa finished 2nd behind Valerija Scholobowa in the Russian championship . It was also used at the European Championships this year in Belgrade, where it won an EM bronze medal behind Natalja Sinischin , Ukraine, and Sofia Mattsson from Sweden. At the Olympic Games in London, Valery Sholobova started for Russia. Marija Gurowa was in September 2012 at the World Championships held in addition to the Olympic Games in Strathcona County, Canada, but only came in 10th place.

2013 Marija Gurowa came in the Russian championship in the weight class up to 55 kg behind Valerija Scholobowa and Irina Kissel in 3rd place, but was not used in the international championships.

In January 2014 she won the prestigious "Ivan Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk in the weight class up to 53 kg. 2014, it was in the weight of 53 kg for the second time before Russian Champion Natalia Malysheva , Stalwira Orschusch and Ljubow Salnikowa . In the final between Japan and Russia, which Japan won 8-0, she lost to multiple Olympic and world champion Saori Yoshida .

Marija Gurawa also proved her good form at the European Championships in April 2014 in Vantaa. In the weight class up to 53 kg, she won there over Burcu Kebic, Turkey, Ewelina Nikolowa, Bulgaria, Natalja Budu, Moldova and Maria Prevolaraki , Greece and thus became European champion. It was not used at the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent.

In January 2016 she took 3rd place at the "Ivan Yarigin" Grand Prix in Krasnoyarsk in the weight class up to 53 kg, behind Ljubow Salnikowa and Chiho Hamada from Japan. In February 2016 she also started at the Klippen Lady Open, but injured herself there and only reached 10th place. Because of this injury she could not try to get a place at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2017 she was again Russian champion in the weight class up to 55 kg. In August 2017 she took part in the World Championships in Paris in this weight class. She won there over Clarissa-Jane Holland from Australia and Lalita from India, but lost in the quarterfinals against Irina Kuratschkina from Belarus. Since this did not reach the final, she was eliminated and ended up in 7th place.

Her last start so far took place in an international championship in May 2018. In Kaspiisk she competed in the weight class up to 55 kg.
