Carol Huynh (born November 16, 1980 in Hazelton , British Columbia ) is a Canadian wrestler . In 2008 she became Olympic champion in the weight class up to 48 kg body weight.

Career

Carol Huynh is the daughter of a Vietnamese woman and a Chinese man who immigrated to Canada in the 1970s. The family, Carol Huynh has five siblings, and with the support of a church association, settled in Hazelton. There she attended high school and began wrestling with her siblings. She was then a member of the Hazelton Wrestling Club . From 1998 she attended Simon Fraser University in Burnaby and joined the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club . In 2007 she moved to the University of Calgary and became a member of the University of Calgary Wrestling Club . Her coaches were mainly Paul Ragusa and Leigh Vierling.

Carol Huynh, who studied kinesiology and psychology, married Dan Briggs, a former wrestler and social worker, in 2005. The couple live in Calgary.

Since the beginning of her career, Carol Huyhn has been wrestling with active athletes in the lowest weight class (up to 44 kg / 46 kg / 48 kg body weight (body weight)), apart from a few excursions into the next higher weight class (up to 51 kg body weight). Women only wrestle in free style.

Carol Huynh's international career began at the 1999 Junior World Championships in Bucharest in the weight class up to 46 kg. She took 7th place there. Even at the Junior World Championships in Nantes in 2000 , she did not manage to achieve a top place, she was only ninth there. But in the same year she started at the World Championships for Senior Women in Sofia and won a bronze medal there straight away . The fight for this medal she defeated the French Farah Touchi on points.

In 2001, Carol Huyhn was also the first Canadian champion in the weight class up to 48 kg. Until 2008 she won this title a total of seven times. Only in 2003 did she have to be content with 3rd place behind Lindsay Belisle and Belinda Chou.

At the 2001 World Cup, which again took place in Sofia, Carol Huynh came with victories over Mayelis Caripa Castillo from Venezuela , Kornelia Tzekowa from Bulgaria and Farah Touchi to the final battle, in which she faced the multiple world champion Irina Melnik-Merleni from Ukraine and who could win this final battle on points. But winning the runner-up world title was a great success for the young Carol Huynh.

In the next few years, Carol Huynh was not so successful on the international wrestling mats. In 2002 she finished 5th at the World Championships in Chalkidis / Greece when she lost after two wins against the Swede Ida Hellström. In 2003 she was not called up for the World Championships and in 2004 she missed the jump to the Olympic Games in Athens because she only finished 2nd in the Canadian Olympic elimination behind Lindsay Belisle .

In 2005 she competed again at the World Championships in Budapest . In the weight class up to 48 kg, she again won a bronze medal. She defeated it in the fight for this medal Mayelis Caripa Castillo. In the same year she also became a student world champion.

In 2006, Carol Huynh only had to defeat Japanese world champion Chiharu Icho at the World Cup in Nagoya and took second place ahead of Stefanie Murata from the United States. At the World Championships this year in Guangzhou she lost again to Chiharu Icho and with another defeat against Francisca de Paola Martinez from Italy also missed the fight for the bronze medal and therefore only came in 5th place.

She also took the same place at the 2007 World Cup in Baku . Here she lost after three victories against Irina Melnik-Merleni and in the fight for a place in the "small final" surprisingly also against Mayelis Caripa Castillo, whom she had defeated several times before (6: 8 technical points).

In 2008, Carol Huynh won the Canadian Olympic Trials ahead of Erica Sharp and represented Canada at the Olympic Games in Beijing in the weight class up to 48 kg. In Beijing she won against Mariya Stadnik from Azerbaijan , Hyung-Joo from South Korea , Tatjana Bogatschuk from Kazakhstan and in the final battle for the first time against Chiharu Icho , who she won with 2-0 rounds and 6-1 techn. Points for sure. She won the Olympic gold medal and thus achieved the greatest success that an athlete can achieve.

She continued her career after the Olympic victory and won a bronze medal at the 2010 World Championships in Moscow, which she won after losing in the semi-finals to Hitomi Obara with victories in the consolation round over Kristina Daranuza, Ukraine and Iwona Matkowska. In 2010 she won the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi , where she defeated the Indian Nirmala Devi in the final. In 2011 she narrowly missed a medal with a 5th place at the World Cup in Istanbul .

In 2012 she managed to win another medal at the Olympic Games in London . With victories over Nguyen Thi Lua, Vietnam and Vanessa Kaladschinskaja, Belarus, a defeat against Hitomi Obara Sakamoto and a victory over Isabella Sambou from Senegal, she won a bronze medal. In September 2013 she was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame for her services to wrestling .
