Career

Lindsay Belisle started wrestling in 1994. At that time she was attending Douglas College in Hazelton . She was then a member of the Hazelton Wrestling Club . After high school, she attended Simon Fraser University in Burnaby , where she began studying education and became a member of the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club . Her coach at the time was Mike Jones, later Dave McKoy and Justin Abdou joined them.

Lindsay Belisle and Christine Nordhagen are among the pioneers of Canadian women's wrestling. When they started wrestling, there were just about 150 wrestlers across Canada. By 2008 that number had increased to nearly 5,000.

In 1997 she became Canadian champion for the first time. By 2006 she won this title seven times. They ranked in the weight classes up to 44 kg, 46 kg, 48 kg and the like. 51 kg body weight (KG), whereby it should be noted that the weight class division has been changed several times by the international wrestling association FILA. Her international career began in 1998 at the Pan American Championships in Winnipeg . She won there in the weight class up to 46 kg in front of the Mexican Maria de las Angelos Barraza Sanchez and the American Afsoon Roshanzamir.

In 1999 and 2000 she also took part in the World Championships in Swedish soil and in Sofia , but only came 11th there on both occasions. Lindsay Belisle was far more successful at the 2001 World Championships in Sofia and 2002 in Chalkidis / Greece . She just missed a medal at both events in the class up to 51 kg with fourth place. In 2001 she failed because of the Chinese Gao Yanzhi and in 2002 because of Sofia Poumpouridou from Greece and Natalja Golts from Russia .

Lindsay Belisle suffered a setback at the 2003 World Championships in New York , where she only achieved 12th place in the class up to 48 kg with a victory over Maria del Mar Peralta from Spain and after a defeat against Patricia Miranda from the United States .

In 2004 she prevailed in the Canadian Olympic elimination (Tirals) in the class up to 48 kg KG against the 2001 Vice World Champion Carol Huynh , who, like her, came from Hazelton, and represented Canada at the Olympic Games in Athens . In Athens she was defeated in her fights against Chiharu Icho from Japan and Brigitte Wagner from Germany and only came in 11th place.

In 2005 Lindsay Belisle achieved a good 2nd place at the World University Championship in Izmir in the class up to 51 kg behind the Ukrainian Irina Melnik-Merleni . In 2006 she won the title again at the Pan American Championships in Rio de Janeiro in front of Jennifer Wong from the United States and Jenny Suazo from Peru . At the subsequent World Championships in Guangzhou / China , she achieved the greatest success of her career in the class up to 51 kg, because she was runner-up in the Tianhe Gymnasium there with four wins and one defeat in the final against Hitomi Sakamoto from Japan. Among the wrestlers she beat was the German champion Brigitte Wagner.

After this world championship, Lindsay Belisle ended her international wrestling career. Since then she has been a wrestling trainer at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby.
