Geet Siriram Sethi (born April 17, 1961 in Delhi , India ) is a professional Indian player in the English Billiards discipline and multiple world champion.

Beginnings

Sethi was born in Delhi, but grew up in Ahmedabad . There he went to St. Xavier's School and graduated from the college of the same name. He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the BK School of Management .

Geet fell for billiards at an early age, but was not allowed to play as a child; only after the family had moved to Ahmedabad did he finally get the chance. His extraordinary talent and interest in billiards made the board of directors of the Gujarat Sports Club in Ahmedabad allow him to play at the members' table. In this club he met Satish Menon , one of the most successful billiards players of the time, and received important tips and instructions for his game from him.

Like most Indians, Sethi also plays snooker , but his passion is English billiards.

Career

National level

In 1979, at the age of 18, Sethi won the Indian Junior Championship in both English Billiards and Snooker. Big names like Michael Ferreira and Subhash Agrawal dominated the Indian pool scene at the time, but Sethi soon caught up with them. In 1982, at the age of 21, he achieved his first double success. First he won the junior doubles championship and then he beat Michael Ferreira in the senior team at the National Billiards Championship . From 1985 to 1988 he won both the Indian National Billiards Championship and the Indian National Snooker Championship four times in a row . In 1989 he was the first amateur to play a maximum break of 147 at the National Snooker Championship , which earned him an entry in the Guinness Book of Records . In 1997 and 2007 Sethi again won the Indian National Billiards Championship and was runner-up in 2008. That same year he made it into the top 16 of the Indian National Snooker Championship .

International level

In 1984 Sethi made his international debut, winning the Snooker Professional-cum-Amateur Championship in England and the International Billiards Amateur Championship in Windsor. In 1985 he won the IBSF World Billiards Championship for amateurs for the first time . In an 8-hour final, he defeated old master Michael Ferreira again. In 1986 he won the Asian Billiards Championship , a year later he won his second IBSF title and then switched to the professional camp. There he won the world title in English Billiards in 1992, 1993 and 1995. At the 1992 World Cup, he set a new world record of 1,276 points that lasted 15 years. The following year he was runner-up in the world championship.

At the Asian Games in 1998 he won the gold medal in doubles with Ashok Shandilya , silver followed in 2002 and bronze in 2006, again with Ashok Shandilya in doubles.

Further successes followed: together with his teammates Devendra Joshi and BVS Moorthy , he won the USA National Team Snooker Championship . In 2007 he won the Irish Open Billiards Championship and was runner-up in the World Professional Billiards Championship . In 2008 Sethi won the English Billiards Open Series in Prestatyn and finished second in the World Pro Billiards Championship in Leeds . In the same year he lost the final against Pankaj Advani at the IBSF World Billiards Championship in points format, as well as at the IBSF World Snooker (Masters) Championship in Wels, Australia.

Sethi still lives in Ahmedabad with his wife Kiran and their children, daughter Jazz and son Raag. There he works as a manager at "Tata Oil Mills".
