Vikas Krishan Yadav (* 10. February 1992 in Singhwa Khas, Hisar district , Haryana ) is an Indian boxer in the middleweight division .
Amateur career
The 1.78 m tall southpaw began his career in 2003 at the Bhiwani boxing club and later also trained at the Army Sports Institute in Pune and with the national team in Punjab . He is also a graduate of Kurukshetra University and trained as a police officer.
Even in his youth he was one of the world's best boxers in his weight class. He won the 2007 Cadet World Championship in Baku (weight class up to 48 kg), the 2010 Asian Youth Championship in Tehran (lightweight) and the 2010 World Youth Championship in Baku (lightweight). He defeated top talents such as Michael O'Reilly (World Cup bronze 2015), Evaldas Petrauskas (Olympic bronze 2012) and Elvin Məmişzadə (World Cup gold 2015). Then he started at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and won a bronze medal in the lightweight, after this time he was knocked out 3: 4 in the semi-finals against Evaldas Petrauskas.
In 2010 he boxed the adults for the first time and won the Indian championship in the lightweight by winning against Akhil Kumar, Amit Kumar, Diwakar Prasad and Vikash Malik. He was then sent in this weight class to the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou , where he won the gold medal. He had defeated Sailom Adi , Xurshid Tojiboyev and Hu Qing , among others . He was thus qualified for the 2011 World Cup in Baku, where he already competed in the welterweight division. With victories against Asadullo Boimurodow, Magomed Nurutdinow, Önder Şipal and Vasile Belous he reached the semifinals, where he was eliminated with a bronze medal against the eventual world champion Taras Schelestjuk with 12:15. He was responsible for the only Indian medal win.
He then started as one of the favorites at the 2012 Olympic Games in London , received a bye for the preliminary round and met in the round of 16 against the American Errol Spence , whom he defeated 13:11. The US team protested against this decision, citing several fouls by the Indian, which the Danish referee Lars Brovil did not punish according to the rules. The world boxing association AIBA confirmed several rule violations by Krishan after a review of the fight, such as holding the opponent several times and spitting out the mouthguard, which is why Spence was awarded four additional points and was subsequently declared the winner with 15:13. An Indian counter-protest was unsuccessful, as was the walk before the International Sports Court .
After the Olympics, Krishan took a break from boxing for more than a year and concentrated on his police career in the state of Haryana, and was awarded the Arjuna Award for his previous successes .
From 2014 he took part in competitions again and had meanwhile risen to the middleweight division. At the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon , he won a bronze medal after a narrow semi-final defeat with 1: 2 against reigning world champion Schänibek Älimchanuly . At the Asian Championships in 2015 in Bangkok he was only defeated in the final against the 2015 vice world champion, Bektemir Meliqoʻziyev , and thus won the silver medal.
He was thus nominated for the 2015 World Championships in Doha and was able to reach the quarterfinals by winning against Zoltán Harcsa and Tomasz Jabłoński , where he lost to Hosam Bakr Abdin in the fight for a medal place . In February 2016 he won the South Asian Games in Guwahati .
In April 2016 he was eliminated from the Asian Olympic qualification in Qian'an in the round of 16 against the Chinese Zhao Minggang and then had to go to Baku for the global qualification in June 2016. There he secured an Olympic ticket with victories against Makoto Takahashi, Saal Kwachatadze and Lee Dong-Jin. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he defeated the US-American Charles Conwell in the preliminary round and the Turkish Önder Şipal in the second round , before being eliminated again in the quarter-finals against the Uzbek Bektemir Meliqoʻziyev.
At the 2017 Asian Championships in Tashkent , he got out without a fight with a bronze medal in the semifinals, as he had already qualified for the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg . At the World Cup, he then lost in the round of 16 against the Briton Benjamin Whittaker .
In April 2018 Krishan won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast after beating Campbell Somerville, Benny Muziyo, Steven Donnelly and Wilfried Ntsengue . In August 2018, he also won a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Jakarta , after losing to Äbilchan Amanqul in the semifinals without a fight .
In 2019 he won the South Asian Games in Kathmandu .
Professional career
Krishan had already fought two fights in the semi-professional mode AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) in 2016 and won one. After the Asian Games, he signed a professional contract in November 2018 with the US promotion company Top Rank of promoter Bob Arum . He made his professional debut on January 18, 2019.
