Taras Olexandrowytsch Schelestjuk ( Ukrainian Тарас Олександрович Шелестюк; * the 30th November 1985 in Makiivka , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian professional boxer in the welterweight division .

As an amateur he was world champion in 2011 and bronze medalist at the 2012 Olympic Games .

Amateur career

Taras Schelestjuk played about 210 amateur fights and was Ukrainian champion for the first time in 2009 after defeating Jewhen Chytrow and Denis Lazarew, among others . He was then allowed to take part in the 2009 World Championships in Milan and, after victories against Leon Chartoy and Önder Şipal, reached the round of 16, where he was eliminated by Serik Säpijew .

In 2010 he was again Ukrainian champion with a final victory against Denis Lasarew and started at the 2010 European Championships in Moscow . There he was able to defeat Andrei Samkowoi , Önder Şipal and John Joyce , before losing to Balázs Bácskai in the semifinals and was eliminated with a bronze medal.

Also in 2011 he won the Ukrainian championship with a final victory against Denis Lasarew and was nominated for the 2011 World Championships in Baku , where he also won the gold medal. He won against Torben Keller, Carlos Banteur , Alexis Vastine , Andrei Samkowoi, Vikas Krishan and Serik Säpijew.

As the reigning world champion, he was then qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London , where he won a bronze medal. After victories against Vasile Belous and Alexis Vastine, he was knocked out in the semifinals by just 10:11 against Fred Evans .

Professional career

After the Olympic Games, Taras Schelestjuk switched to professional life and signed with the US promoters Thompson Boxing Promotions and Banner Promotions . His manager was then Vadim Kornilov. He has been trained by Freddie Roach , Eric Brown and Joel Díaz so far . He made his professional debut on March 29, 2013.

On November 6, 2015, he won the WBA Intercontinental and NABO North American welterweight titles . He defeated the Russian Aslanbek Kosajew (balance: 26-1) unanimously on points.
