Demetrius Cesar "Boo Boo" Andrade (born February 26, 1988 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is an American professional boxer . He was world champion of the amateurs 2007 in the welterweight division and is a former professional world champion of the WBO in the light middleweight and current in the middleweight division.

Amateur career

Demetrius Andrade is the son of a family who immigrated to the USA from the Cape Verde Islands. His father Paul Andrade became his first coach when he started boxing in 1994 at the age of 6. Later Daniel Keefe was added as a trainer. Demetrius Andrade quickly developed into an outstanding boxer. At the age of 17 he was one of the best American boxers in his weight class, the welterweight. It is noteworthy that he is 1.85 m tall with a weight of about 70 kg (weight limit in welter weight is 69 kg). Of course, this size gives him a range advantage over smaller boxers.

In 2005, at the age of 17, he won the United States' first welterweight championship in the seniors. In the same year his international boxing career began. In two international matches between Hungary and the USA in Kecskemét and Székesfehérvár , he won the welterweight division over István Szili and József Kovács on points. In the same year he was used in the US national team at the AIBA World Cup in Moscow . He had to accept point defeats there against the more experienced Vitalie Grușac from Moldova and Andrei Balanow from Russia .

2006 Demetrius Andrade was again USA welterweight champion and won the "National Golden Gloves" title in the same weight class. At the AIBA World Cup in Baku / Azerbaijan he was much more successful than at the World Cup in 2005, because he won against Rahib Bailarow from Azerbaijan and Ruslan Safiullin from Kazakhstan clearly on points. Against Emilio Correa Bayeux from Cuba , he lost just as clearly with 29:12 points.

In 2007 Demetrius Andrade lost in a qualifying tournament for the Pan American Games in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, in the final against Erislandy Lara with 4: 9 points. In the same year he again won the "National Golden Gloves" welterweight title while he was injured at the USA championship. At the Pan American Games taking place in Rio de Janeiro in July 2007, he defeated Jaohn Jackson from Virgin Island with 23: 5 points, Jean Prada Pasedo from Venezuela by breaking off in the 3rd round, Diego Gabriel Chaves from Argentina with 22: 0 points and lost to local hero Pedro Lima in the final with a narrow and controversial 6: 7 points.

In the US Olympic Trials in Houston, which soon followed, he won the final two matches over Keith Thurman, clearly on points (21:13 and 27:13).

The 2007 World Championships in Chicago were the highlight of Demetrius Andrade's career to date . He successively defeated Ihwania Kachaber from Georgia with 22:11 points, Dimitri Sostaks from Latvia with 19: 3 points, Mahamed Nurudsinau from Belarus with 26: 6 points, Jack Culcay-Keth from Germany with 30: 9 points and Adem Kılıççı from the Turkey with 22: 6 points. He was in the final against Non Boonjumnong from Thailand . In the second round of this final he was already leading by 10 points when Boonjumnong had to be taken out of the ring due to an injury. Demetrius Andrade was World Champion 2007 of the amateurs in the welterweight division.

In 2008, Andrade has so far shown itself in two international matches between Russia and the USA. In Magnitogorsk he won against Dimitri Ivanov with 20:12 points, but suffered a scarce 10:12 point defeat against the same boxer in Novosibirsk . At the Olympic Games in Beijing , he was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Professional career

He switched to the professional camp in 2008 and is trained by David Keefe, Virgil Hunter and his father Paul Andrade. After 18 wins in a row, he won against the Mexican Freddy Hernández (30 wins - 3 defeats) in January 2013 and then got a WBO world title chance against Saurbek Bajsangurow . But since Bajsangurow sustained an injury during the preparation and thus could not defend his title in time, the world title was withdrawn from him. Andrade was then allowed to fight on November 9, 2013 against the now vacant title against Wanes Martirosijan (33-0, 21 knockout) and won it just about on points.

He defended his title for the first time on June 14, 2014 against Brian Rose (25-1) and won through tKo in the seventh round. In July 2015, his title was revoked due to inactivity.

He won his next fight prematurely in October 2015 against Dario Pucheta (20-2). In June 2016, he beat Willie Nelson (25-2) early in the twelfth round.
