Emilio Correa Vaillant (born May 20, 1952 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a former Cuban boxer . He was Olympic champion in 1972 and world champion of amateurs in 1974 in the welterweight division.

Career

Emilio Correa started boxing in 1966 at the age of 14. After he was one of the best Cuban boxers in his weight class as a junior, he was accepted into the Cuban army and delegated to the performance center of the Cuban Boxing Association in Santiago de Cuba . There he found excellent coaches and in Roberto Caminero Perez , Enrique Regüeiferos , Felix Betancourt and Rolando Garbey also excellent training partners.

In 1970 he first took part in the major international boxing tournament of the Cuban boxing association Giraldo Córdova Cardín in Havana . He reached the final in the light welterweight division, but lost on points against Enrique Regüeiferos. A year later he started in this tournament in the light middleweight division and was defeated there in the final by Rolando Garbey just on points. Due to his good performance, he was used by the Cuban Boxing Association at the Pan American Games in Cali / Colombia in welterweight. He justified this trust and became the Pan American champion with a victory over the American Larry Carlisle .

In 1972 Emilio Correa became Cuban champion for the first time. He won the welterweight final over Felix Betancourt. He also won the first welterweight victory at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Havana. In the final he beat his compatriot Jesus Alvarez there. He then also represented Cuba at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich in the welterweight division. He was 20 years ago at the height of its power and defeated in Munich Damiano Lassandro from Italy on points, the Olympic champion from 1968 Manfred Wolke from the GDR by technical knockout in the second round, the European champion Guenther Meier from the Federal Republic of Germany narrowly 3: 2 judge votes, Jesse Valdez from the United States with the same result and came in the final battle to a clear 5: 0 point victory over the experienced Hungarian János Kajdi . He was Olympic champion and received the gold medal .

In 1973 Emilio Correa won again the Cuban welterweight championship with a victory over Marcos A. Santana and also won the same weight class again at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Camagüey . There he beat the Soviet athlete Vladimir Smirnov in the final. In the same year he also won the 10th championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact states (SKDA championship) in Olomouc in welterweight with a point victory in the final over the Soviet athlete Oleg Lifanov.

In 1974 Emilio Correa won his third Cuban welterweight championship with a final win over Lucio Sanchez. He was also victorious again at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament . In the final he won there over Luis Felipe Martinez, after defeating Alexander Popa from Romania in the semifinals . In 1974 the first world championships for amateurs took place in Havana. Emilio Correa was just as superior in welterweight as two years earlier in the Olympic Games and became world champion with five victories in superior style . On the way to this success he defeated Joe Alerch from Nigeria by knockout in the 1st round, Kalevi Kosunen from Finland on points, Reginald Forde from Guiana by breaking off in the 2nd round, Plamen Jankow from Bulgaria on points and in the final Clinton Jackson from the United States by KO in the 3rd round.

In 1975 Emilio Correa continued his success at the national level. He was again Cuban welterweight champion with a victory over Jesus Alvarez. He also won again the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Las Villas with a victory in the final over Juan Gutiérrez. At the Pan American Games this year in Mexico City , however, he suffered a surprising defeat from the American Clinton Jackson and only came in 3rd place.

In the 1976 Olympic year Emilio Correa won the Cuban championship in the final fight of the welterweight against Jose M. Pozzo. He also won again at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín tournament in Pinar del Río by winning points in the final over Karl-Heinz Krüger from the GDR . He also won the Strandja tournament in Sofia . He defeated Plamen Jankow in the final battle. After these successes, he was again a favorite in the welterweight division at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . He won his first fight there by breaking off in the 2nd round over Plamen Jankow, but surprisingly lost in the round of 16 against Pedro Gamarro from Venezuela by breaking off in the 3rd round. In boxing, the exact placement of the boxers after the medal winners is actually not common. As a loser in the second round, Emilio Correa came in 9th place together with the seven other losers in the last 16.

Emilio Correa's winning streak at the Cuban Championships continued in 1977. He won there with a victory over Jose Gómez in the light middleweight division for his sixth title in a row. He also celebrated his sixth tournament victory at the Giraldo Córdova Cardín in Matanzas with a victory in the final battle against his compatriot Gilberto Cano. Then he was successful in Havana at the 13th SKDA championship. His final opponent Valeri Limasow from the USSR lost against him on points.

Emilio Correa experienced a nasty surprise at the Cuban championship in 1978. He was knocked out there in the second round of the light middleweight division against Alberto Montoya. He was then at the start of the World Cup in Belgrade , again in the welterweight division. Emilio Correa won his first fight in Belgrade against Philipp Hoslove from Nigeria by knockout in the 3rd round, but had to admit defeat in the round of 16 to the German champion Ernst Müller from Düren , who won against him by breaking off in the 2nd round. So he was only ninth again.

In 1979 Emilio Correa celebrated another success at the Cuban championship. He was in the light middleweight division with a point win over Felipe Martinez for the seventh time Cuban champion.

After this last success, Emilio Correa resigned. He became a trainer in the performance center of the Cuban Boxing Association in Havana. His son Emilio Correa Bayeux , who won the silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, followed in his footsteps .
