Andrés Aldama Cabrera (born April 9, 1956 in Matanzas ) is a former Cuban boxer . The southpaw was a 1980 Olympic welterweight champion.
Career
Andrés Aldama grew up in Matanzas and started boxing there as a teenager. To secure his livelihood, he became a member of the Cuban armed forces, but was released from military service during his boxer career. He boxed as a senior in the half welter and welterweight classes and was relatively tall for this weight class at 1.83 meters, which gave him range advantages over some competitors. His coach was the former professional boxer Miguel Antonio Herrera.
After some successes at the national level with the juniors, it appeared positively for the first time in 1976 with the seniors at important competitions. At the Cuban championships this year he finished third behind world champions Emilio Correa Vaillant and José M. Pozo, but won the important boxing tournament of the Cuban boxing association "Giraldo Córdova Cardín" in Pinar del Río , for which he had trained in the light welterweight division , before Secundino Ferrer. This gave him the chance to compete in this weight class at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal . In preparation for these games, he started at two tournaments in Europe and came in at the tournament for the "Golden Belt" in Bucharest after a point defeat against Calistrat Cuțov from Romania on the 2nd place, while he was in an international tournament in Minsk in the final defeated the Soviet athlete Viktor Zwerew and won this tournament.
At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal he won the light welterweight division over Sabahattin Bürcü from Turkey and Jesus Sanchez from the Dominican Republic by breaking off in the 2nd round, over József Nagy from Hungary by T.KO in the 2nd round and about Vladimir Kolew from Bulgaria by KO in the 1st round. In the final, he lost to Sugar Ray Leonard from the United States on points and therefore had to be satisfied with the silver medal .
In the years 1977 to 1979 and 1981 and 1982 Andrés Aldama won five Cuban championship titles. 1978 light welterweight and 1977, 1979, 1981 and 1982 welterweight. In the final fights he defeated Alberto Montoya , Victor Corona, Jorge Bueno, Hilario Acea and others. José Luis Hernández .
In 1977 Andrés Aldama also won the light welterweight title at the Central American & Caribbean Championships in Panama City . In the final, he defeated Nicolas Garcia from Nicaragua on points (5-0). In 1978 he competed in the World Amateur Championship in Belgrade . He won there in the light welterweight division by KO in the 3rd round over Ildemar Paisan from Venezuela and over Anwar Ssamsul from Indonesia by breaking off in the 1st round. In the quarterfinals he was defeated by Valery Lvov from the USSR just on points (2: 3 judges' votes) and therefore only finished 5th.
In 1979 Andrés Aldama won the championship at the Pan American Games in San Juan , Puerto Rico . He won the welterweight final there over Mike McCallum from Jamaica by breaking off in the 2nd round.
At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , Andrés Aldama started in the welterweight division. He proved to be the best boxer in this weight class and deservedly won the gold medal. On the way to this medal he defeated Pierre Sotourney from Benin by T. KO in the 3rd round, Israel Akopkochjan from the USSR on points (3: 2), Plamen Jankow from Bulgaria by KO in the 3rd round and Karl-Heinz in the semifinals Krüger from the GDR on points (5-0). In the final, John Mugabi from Uganda opposed him, but the points win with 4: 1 judges' votes for Andres Aldama was deserved.
After 1981 there were no international championships in which Andrés Aldmaa could have started, he aimed to start at the World Cup in Munich in 1982 . Although he had defeated José Luis Hernández in the Cuban championship , this was preferred to him at this world championship. Hernandez then retired in Munich in the preliminary round.
